An INCREDIBLE shark tooth hunting day! 🦈

People tell us all the time “I’ve been to the beach so many times and I’ve NEVER found a shark tooth”!

I bet they’ve stepped on a billion of them!

They’re hard to spot unless you know what you’re looking for! So here are some shark tooth hunting tips!

1. When you’re walking in the sand, look along the water’s edge of the ocean - our favorite time to go out is an hour after high tide! Then the water’s edge is constantly moving back and more and more treasures become visible for the next few hours!

2. Shark teeth are almost always dark black. They won’t break if you try to snap them in half.

3. Shark teeth are usually shiny - they glisten in the water! Most of the ones you’ll find will be small so look closely and as low to the ground as your back can tolerate 🤣

4. Look for black triangles or things that look like a black 🐳 tail. Message us with pics if you’re not sure the thing you found is a shark tooth - we can help you figure out if you got a real one or a shell cleverly disguised as a shark tooth.

We carry an empty water bottle with us on our beach walks. Anything that looks like it’s probably a tooth goes in the bottle and when we get back to Treat Yo Self, we go through them and toss anything that’s not affirmatively a tooth - and keep the rest! We have a special box FULL of thousands of shark teeth from our magical trips to Surf City!

Once you find a few - you’ll officially be a shark tooth hunting addict! It’s the most fun treasure hunt - these things are between 10,000 and 75 million years old! Cool stuff!

is one of your “must do” items while you’re here! They provide EVERYTHING down to the steamer pot! Pick your seasoning, your meat, your seafood - and they’ll have everything loaded into the steam pot waiting for you when you arrive! The helpful staff gives you simple instructions to steam your pot back at the beach house and in under an hour, you’ll have a super delicious, fun meal that’s enough to feed the whole gang!

Thanks for the amazing meal, Topsail Steamer! This is going to be something we do as a tradition every time we come down from now on! 🌅

We have been working on this house for months. We make progress every time we come, and we were looking SO forward to the day that at least one room was totally done.

Today we finished the details for TWO rooms! 🤩

The navy and white room might be my favorite room in the entire house. I fell in love with this bed from the second I saw it and the entire room was designed around the brass railing. 🏴‍☠️ ❤️ And as always, I am obsessed with the peel & stick wallpaper from - I can literally spend DAYS scrolling through the thousands (maybe millions) of patterns they have!

We can’t wait for you to be our guest!

One of the neatest things about Topsail Island is that it’s home to Loggerhead Turtle nesting sites.

Turtle Volunteers walk the beach before sunrise every morning, looking for turtle tracks, which lead them to nesting sites. They carefully transport the turtle eggs - placed gently into a bucket in a spiral so they can be placed back in the new nest in the exact order they were removed - to a spot high on a dune with lots of sun so they can incubate and be protected from waves.

About 60 days later, the Turtle Volunteers come back every night at sunset. They ask everyone around to turn off their outside house lights - baby turtles go towards light, and they need the only light they see to be the light of the ocean so they can make their way to sea. The Volunteers build a sand ramp to help the babies have a safe journey to their new home in the ocean. Then they wait for the sand to eventually look like it starts to boil - this is the babies hatching and crawling to the top of the sand, which is a 3-day adventure for the little guys, and baby turtles pop out!!

Crossing our fingers that tonight or tomorrow night is the big night for this special nest while we are here! ❤️🐢

Once upon a time, I saw these paintings online and decided to decorate a whole entire house around them. 🌴🍊

About 7 weeks ago, we got a call on a Wednesday saying these would be delivered the next day to .yo.self.beach.house between 2:30 and 8:30 - 4 hours away. We had to be there to sign for them, so we hastily rearranged our schedules to be up there the next day.

2:30 came and went. And 3:30. And 4:30. Eventually 8:30 passed and I called the decor company. The paintings were lost. 😑 They promised to have another set rushed to us. We hoped the “rushed” paintings didn’t look like finger paintings when they finally arrived.

They didn’t. ❤️

This room makes me so happy!!! It looks exactly like it looked in my mind!! These paintings add so much color and life to Treat Yo Self and we LOVE it!

I can’t tell you how excited I am for our friends and family to stay here!! 🥰 It’s such a happy place that’s so relaxing and fun - we hope everyone who visits here enjoys it as much as we do!

We thought .yo.self.beach.house would look cooler with palm trees than the magnolia trees that the previous owners never watered, ever, and were beyond saving.

Completely unprovoked and on his own, arranged for every dead tree in our yard to be replaced with tropical, beautiful palm trees. I can’t even believe how amazing it looks!!!! 😍

Cocktails anyone? 🍹

Our orange wallpaper from adds just the right pop of happy color! Vintage details like the mercury glass and brass bar cart and crystal decanter set are a visual example of what feels like. Elevators are great. They make getting groceries inside so much easier. And suitcases. If the weather is bad, you stay dry inside an elevator. And if you’re coming back from a long day on the beach with both arms full of beach towels and coolers, it’s so much easier to press a button than to take multiple flights of stairs!

Treat Yo Self has an elevator. Plus 2 sets of stairs, if you’re trying to get your steps in. 🏆

Topsail has some pretty cool history!

When you’re driving on the island, you might see the tower in this picture - Tower Three. It’s right past the entrance to Surf City, and there are 7 more towers on the island, too!

Topsail has 8 unique landmarks: the Towers. Not all of the 8 Towers, which were part of a 1940s top-secret research program, are easily identifiable today. Some of them (like Tower #3!) are still in their original state, each sitting on a 5-foot thick, 900-square feet concrete platform, held up by 41 pilings which are buried 40 feet into the sand. Others have been purchased and turned into vacation homes - like Tower #4, which is just a few houses down from .yo.self.beach.house!

The towers were built as part of a top-secret program during the Cold War. The program was called “Operation Bumblebee”. It was a joint operation between Johns Hopkins University and Navy to test the ramjet engine - which was the precursor to the modern jet engine. They originally began the project in New Jersey, and researches chose the then-isolated island of Topsail in North Carolina to test the ramjet’s flight path.

Amazingly, the 8 Towers have withstood the brutal force of many hurricanes, and can still be spotted on the island today! If you spot them, post your photos on our page or tag us on Instagram! We would love to see them! 📸

Sometimes things don’t work out the way you planned, but they work out exactly the way they’re supposed to!

We originally ordered these pendant lights from to go above our bar. When they arrived, they were much bigger than we anticipated - they definitely wouldn’t work over the bar. I LOVED them and knew I had to find SOMEWHERE to use them!

A few days later I was walking up the stairs, wondering what I could do to add life to the otherwise-boring staircase.

“THOSE PENDANTS WOULD BE PERFECT HERE!” -actual conversation with myself in my head

We installed them and they look even better than we imagined! A little pop of glam in the staircase! 🤩Details make all the difference.

We love dogs. So naturally, we love to visit dog-friendly beaches! 🐾

Nothing says “we love dogs here” louder than having dog poo bags *right next* to the Welcome sign at the entrance to the city! WE 👏 LOVE 👏 THIS!!!

Dogs must be leashed when they’re on the beach. Please be courteous and clean up after them so the beach stays clean and dogs remain welcome! 🥰 If they dig holes, be sure to fill the holes back up before you head out for the day! That way mama turtles or hatching baby turtles don’t get trapped - and humans don’t miss their step and trip over it! (Yes, humans matter too…not just dogs and turtles) ❤️ 🐶 🐢

One of the first things we were excited about when we bought a beach house: we could get a beach house SIGN!! 🥳

Our sign was delivered today!! did an AWESOME job with this! And the owner is fantastic, she responds super quickly to questions!

We have to let this cure inside for 10 more days and after that, we will be ready to mount it on the balcony! Yay!

The sunrise is even more amazing when there are surfers in the water. 🏄

It’s like one of those 70s summer movies where the color was over-saturated and you could almost feel the blistering summer heat just looking at the screen. Experiencing the daylight making its beautiful entrance is worth waking up early for and should be at the top of anyone’s to-do list when they visit Treat Yo Self Beach House. 🌴🌅

It was another busy day getting projects done at Treat Yo Self Beach House! 🌴

The Shipwreck Room is starting to come to life 🏴‍☠️ We are LOVING this nautical wallpaper from - their quality is amazing and they have SO much cool stuff! The bunk bed is heavy duty, and the xl twin bed is large enough to sleep adult guests (or tall teenagers)! Navy nightstand from is the perfect spot to store bedtime stories and little treasures ❤️

More details to come, but this was a good start today! It’s so exciting to see things come together! This is the perfect room for our little guests to make such fun beach memories. ❤️

I woke up this morning and had no concept of what time it was. Black-out curtains tend to have that effect! I stepped out of bed and walked 2 steps onto the balcony and opened the curtains: the sky was pink and the sun wasn’t up yet! So I ran across the street as fast as I could.

I got to see the sun just as it peeked out of the clouds and came over the ocean. There’s something magical about watching the sun come up. It’s a new beginning. The universe’s happy reminder that whatever happened yesterday doesn’t matter - you’ve got another opportunity today to make it a good day.

When I’m decorating, I have an idea of what I want things to look like in my head before I actually find the “things”. A lot of times I find out those “things” don’t actually exist outside of my imagination - or if they do, they have to be custom-made. 😣

My mental picture of the kitchen pendants had rattan shades with over-sized frosted globes. The dining room chandelier will be brass with frosted globes - and I wanted the pendants to coordinate, but not to “match”. It’s so much more fun to have a variety of textures and elements in a room - it brings it to life! 🤩

I found these pendants at and it’s like they literally took a picture of what I envisioned in my mind and created them for me! 😍They’re the perfect size and add a pop of “glam meets the beach” flare to Treat Yo Self Beach House! ☀️

We got the accent wall finished in the Hidden Creatures room and we are LOVING IT 😍 This wallpaper was something I would have loved when I was a little girl - so many magical creatures are hiding in it! We hope our little guests think it’s as much fun as we do! 🧜‍♀️

Lots more details to go in this room (and basically every room still) but it’s getting closer! 🌴

(Our helper, Jay-Z, was basically worthless. He complained about being hungry and slept on the job). 😑

We knew we had deeded sound access…we just didn’t know WHERE! So we did some digging in tax records and figured out where it was - even closer than we thought! Just over a block from Treat Yo Self! We expected something basic - maybe a beat up old dock, and we guessed we would have to trudge through weeds to get there. Not the case. This was like discovering a Secret Garden….but on the water! Wow! Little fiddler crabs were scurrying around and tiny fish were all over the place! What a great spot to go fishing for us and our guests!
