A really cool tree. Casuarina equisetifolia. Part of the Shee-Oak family, but not really related to Oaks at all: “shee” comes from the sound the wind makes as it whistles through the leaves/needles; “oak” comes from the quality of the wood. Commonly called “Pacific Ironwood”, but also not part of the traditional ironwood family; it is a hardwood evergreen, similar to cedars.
