You may have heard that Onslow County Museum has a coffin in our collection! ⚰️ Well, the stories are true!

After being accidentally unearthed in Swansboro in 1975, the lead coffin of Cyrus B. Glover (1821-1867) was indeed donated to Onslow County Museum, where it remains properly stored in Collections to this day. The remains of Cyrus B. Glover were reinterred at Seaside Memorial Park in Swansboro.

Periodically, and as recently as 2023, the coffin is featured in a Museum display. However, for the sake of preservation, we usually keep the artifact safely stored in our Collections room, which is not generally accessible to the public.

Nevertheless, we do invite you to come explore our permanent exhibit, The Water and the Wood, which covers the history of Onslow County from the prehistoric to the present! Numerous artifacts with stories just as rich as that of our lead coffin are ready to be discovered by you and your family when you come visit us at 301 S Wilmington St, in Richlands, NC!

Visit Onslow County Museum this Halloween! We'll have candy at the front desk, ready for trick-or-treaters and their parents, from 8:00am to 5:00pm!

What started as an October spooky experiment has turned into a year round experience for our guests, an outlet to share my love of Swansboro, and one of my proudest accomplishments. 🥹
