Information Needed
WSDOT has informed us they are utilizing new tactics concerning RV parking in SOME Public Rest Areas (PRA). To that end, the NB and SB Smokey PRA’s and the Gee Creek PRA in Southwest Washington will eliminate RV parking except for the ability to dump. In addition, state patrol presence will be increased in these locations to enforce “stay” laws. Will this make a difference? WSDOT hopes that the trucking industry will keep information flowing to help them gauge success. Let us know what your drivers are experiencing over the coming weeks and months…any improvement, or are these tactics making the problem worse for commercial vehicle parking?

Washington State Patrol shared their new virtual weigh in motion. This information is gathered by cameras and scales and sent to any officer in the area. They can also see the Motor Carrier and DOT safety record. So remember, if a sign says "Trucks use Right Lane" be in that lane even if the scale is closed. It could be being monitored by mobile units.

For those of you headed Northbound on I-5 past JBLM. All lanes have reopened following this morning's severe crash, but expect lingering delays. Make sure you all are staying safe out on the road in this rain!

FINAL 1:41 p.m.: All lanes of northbound I-5 have reopened after this morning's crash. Expect backups to continue into the afternoon commute.

UPDATE 12:24 p.m.: The last part of the cleanup process is now underway. Our crews are sanding and sweeping the roadway in advance of reopening all lanes. We also have a large semi-truck trailer on scene ready to haul off the burned out semi-truck trailer.

UPDATE Noon: We're seeing a 13-mile northbound backup from the collision scene. The southbound backup is in the area of JBLM main gate.

UPDATE: 9:07 a.m.: Two lanes of northbound I-5 are now open. Expect long backups through the area as we're still removing debris. If you can still delay your travels. please do so.

UPDATE 8:43 a.m: Northbound I-5 crash scene investigation is complete. We're now in the process of removing debris and vehicles. Working to reopen lanes as soon as possible. Please continue delaying travels if you can.

UPDATE 7 a.m.: The blockage of northbound I-5 near JBLM will likely last through the morning commute. While the left shoulder remains open, it could close again so continue to avoid the area if possible.

UPDATE 6:30 a.m.: Washington State Patrol is using high-tech gear to investigate the crash scene. We have equipment standing ready to clean up the roadway once the investigation is complete.

UPDATE 6 a.m.: We've temporarily reopened the left shoulder at the crash scene. We're working to let people caught in the backup through. However, we continue to ask drivers to avoid the area/delay travels as we will likely need to close the shoulder again.

UPDATE 5:32 a.m.: Northbound I-5 backups extend into Nisqually. Please avoid the area and delay your travels if possible. It is not known when the northbound highway will reopen. There are no good alternative routes in this area.

Northbound I-5 at JBLM/Lakewood (milepost 122) is fully blocked due to a multi-vehicle crash involving a fire truck and an IRT vehicle. There is no estimated time for when It will reopen but this could be blocked for quite awhile. There are no good detours but drivers can take SR 510 and 507 or US 101/SR 3 and SR 16 back to I-5 but expect significant congestion on those routes. Delay your travels if at all possible.
