Fears that a nuclear power plant disaster could be triggered by Russia’s war against Ukraine have now escalated to include a nuclear plant on Russian turf. The six-reactor Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine, occupied by Russian forces for more than two years, is already cause for perpetual alarm. Now, Ukrainian troops advancing into Russia are close to that country’s six-reactor Kursk nuclear power plant, the same design as the Chornobyl reactor that exploded and melted down in 1986. Our story https://beyondnuclearinternational.org/2024/09/01/a-crisis-at-kursk/

We turn green (as in sickened) when nuclear is classified as green (energy) because it's so clearly the opposite of all that. So how and why does nuclear power slither under the radar in this way? Andy Stirling and Phil Johnstone take a good look at the connections, not only to the nuclear energy lobby in the powerful pro-nuclear countries such as France but also at the influence of the nuclear weapons nations. https://beyondnuclearinternational.org/2024/08/25/why-the-big-push-for-nuclear-power-as-green/

Heavy lobbying by France and a "military romance" provide some answers, write Andy Stirling and Phil Johnstone Whatever one’s view of nuclear issues, an open mind is crucial. Massive vested interests and noisy media clamour require efforts to view a bigger picture. A case in point arises around the European Commission’s much criticised proposal – and the European Parliament’s strongly opposed decision – to last year accredit nuclear power as a ‘green’ energy source In a series of…...

This June, UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that, given the heightened risk of nuclear annihilation, “humanity is on a knife’s edge.” That nightmare could escalate to a point of no return, argues Professor Lawrence Wittner, if Donald Trump returns to the US presidency. That is because Trump has destroyed virtually every meaningful arms control agreement, and the US remains intent on building up its nuclear weapons arsenal. Furthermore, while he was president, even then Trump insiders were appalled he would actually consider a nuclear attack. They also discovered that the idea of incinerating several million people didn't faze him. But a second Trump presidency would this time would be packed with "yes men", and that could spell global disaster. It's time to restore the arms control treaties Trump tore up and ensure the US embraces nuclear disarmament.

Reuters News Service reporting Kremlin warning of Ukrainian military strike inside Russia is taking aim on the Kursk nuclear power station (4 units of the Chornobyl-style RBMK-1000 graphite moderated reactor, no containment system). Ukraine is denying claim as "insane propaganda.:

Russia accused Ukraine on Saturday of planning to attack a nuclear plant in the Kursk region that President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's troops have entered and blame such a "provocation" on Moscow, Interfax news agency said.

Residents and supporters of Wendell, MA have their priorities straight. They dissuaded a very large utility-grade lithium ion battery project from clear cutting its way into the rural Massachusetts town.

"We support solar, wind or battery build-out if done responsibly in terms of size, safety, and location, while actually reducing greenhouse gas emissions. And please, let's not sacrifice Western Mass. biodiversity for energy consumption in Eastern Massachusetts. Conservation comes first!"

Power generation isn't the first choice in a sane 21st Century energy policy that promotes conservation, energy efficiency and renewable energy generation.

Congratulations to NAB for setting the compass point for national policy example. Democracy works!!!!

Randy Kehler, speaking out against the US war on Viet Nam as a young draft resister inspired Daniel Ellsberg to risk prison time to release the "Pentagon Papers." Randy went on to inspire and guide the antinuclear power campaign and "nuclear freeze" to stop nuclear weapons forward deployment. Quite a legacy, Randy, thank you. Now, an equal contribution to our "affinity with infinity." https://www.recorder.com/-The-ultimate-person-of-conscience-Friends-remember-anti-war-activist-Randy-Kehler-56157722?fbclid=IwY2xjawEYZgxleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHbuv3KCb9W6Ip2k-1Uxio2A_bVx2mGoQRSCutjGFga7qZ_JzQ5vm5zI94g_aem_FXEZRw4d6IV35VkVxHxq6Q

An in-depth look at the radiological contamination -- and legacy of disease -- in French Polynesia from atomic testing, including the Olympic surfing site. If you have access to the New York Times, well worth a read.

In 1974, a radioactive cloud from a French nuclear test drifted over Teahupo’o, Tahiti, now the surfing venue for the Paris Games. Villagers still feel the effects.

Trump's Project 2025 would restart the US nuclear weapons testing program southern Nevada and finish the Yucca Mt. high-level radioactive waste deep geological repository amid earthquake fault and surrounded by young volcanoes (the Lathrop Wells cinder cones). The fault lines have evidence of volcanic ash at the proposed nuclear waste repository depth.

A victory by Donald Trump in November could revive America’s long-shuttered nuclear weapons testing program in Southern Nevada, as well as the stalled effort to bury the nation’s radioactive waste at Yucca Mountain, 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas.

For those in the greater DC area:
On July 16, Trinity Day, the American University Nuclear Studies Institute and the Institute for Energy & Environmental Research will sponsor a special showing of the award-winning documentary “Silent Fallout.” Viewed through the lens of the Baby Tooth Survey that, from 1958 -70, examined thousands of donated baby teeth for radioactive strontium-90, this award-winning film by director Hideaki Ito examines the health effects of atmospheric nuclear testing on the American public. This special showing will kick off a month-long nation-wide tour to bring attention to the still ongoing effects of low-level radiation on human health.

The film will be shown on the 79th anniversary of the first test of an atomic bomb in Alamogordo, NM, the first of over 400 world-wide atmospheric nuclear tests. The program will be held from 7:00 to 9:30 pm at the Katzen Art Center’s Abramson Recital Hall located at 4400 Massachusetts Ave NW, Washington, DC 20016. The program will be hosted by Professor Peter Kuznick, Director of the Nuclear Studies Institute. Following the film there will be a panel discussion led by Dr. Arjun Makhijani, President of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research, a leading expert on the health and environmental effects of radiation. The film’s director, Hideaki Ito, will discuss the film and answer questions from the audience.

This program is limited to 200 and is free and open to the public. Please register at the following web address:

Join us for a night of watching "Secret Fallout" followed by a lively panel discussion!

Working for a world without nuclear power or nuclear weapons

Beyond Nuclear is a 501(c)(3) non-profit membership organization based in the nuclear-free city of Takoma Park. We advocate for an end to the development and use of nuclear power and nuclear weapons and promote the safer, sustainable solutions to climate change including energy efficiency and renewable energy. We work with and assist grassroots groups in the US and around the world to oppose uranium mining and processing, nuclear power plant operation, and unsafe radioactive waste dumps and “storage” schemes. We have experts on our staff who specialize in every aspect of the nuclear fuel chain as well as the health and environmental impacts of nuclear power and nuclear weapons.
