We embarked on a journey to Krakow during the most enchanting season of the year. Christmas markets are filled with tantalizing Polish delights and one-of-a-kind products. Of course, our taste buds couldn't resist sampling the legendary pierogi, zapiekanka, bagels, and delectable Polish kiełbasa! Let's not forget the heavenly array of cheeses.Krakow is not just any old city. It's a hidden gem boasting a rich history, mesmerizing architecture, fantastic cuisine, and trendy cocktail bars. This place is worthy of a visit regardless of the season, but during Christmas, it takes on a whole new level of magic.

Today we are enjoying the hospitality of a Osmiza. Rather than restaurants or agri-tourism establishments, they are places where local wines (Terrano, Vitovska and Malvasia) and traditional foods (eggs, sausages, salamis and cheeses) can be purchased and enjoyed just where they are produced.

The osmiza, or osmica in Slovenian, is a tradition that dates back to the time of Maria Theresa of Austria. In 1784 peasants were authorized to sell wines and foods that they produced directly in their cellars.

This permission to sell lasted for periods of eight consecutive days (from which osmiza derives, since eight in Slovenian is "osem") or multiples of eight throughout the year. The peasants could determine the hours and the prices.

Although Exeter doesn’t specialize in Italy, Trieste and the surrounds are rich in Central European history as Trieste was the major port city of the Habsburg Empire.

In the province of Trieste, primarily in the Karst plateau area, there are about 50 osmizas, with variable opening hours. Open osmizas are still marked with a bundle of branches clearly visible along the street and on the house where the osmiza is located, The Cacovich family make everything you see here, plus honey!.

This week we have been in Transylvania, exploring Saxon villages and towns, visiting one of King Charles III homes, and eating farm to table. Romania is enchanting, unique and one of the most biodiverse countries in the world.

Today we ventured out by e-bikes from the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz toward the wine region of Maienfeld, Jenins and Malans in the canton of the Grisons. The first part of the ride took us through the scenic village of Bad Ragaz, along the river Rhine and then crossing over towards Maienfeld. This region of Grisons inspired the poetess Johanna Spyri to write her novel Heidi, which is loved by many around the globe.
Small family-owned vineyards have continuously been producing wines in this region for centuries. Markus our passionate guide, took us through these small towns through alleyways, passing by castles and vineyards, ending up at a local wine producer’s home for a tasting accompanied by delicious local cheese, dried curated meats, and bread. The Grisons winegrowers help to achieve a special shine thanks to natural cultivation and small yields. We returned to Bad Ragaz with memories of this beautiful and endearing region, feeling inspired to explore more. Warming sunshine with cooler summer temperatures and a mild breeze, made the day perfect!
