Our next "Through the Lens" program is a very special one -- An Evening with Billy Kidd - 60th Anniversary of Olympic Medals.

On this night we'll celebrate the 60th anniversary of Billy Kidd and Jimmie Heuga becoming the first American men to win Olympic medals in alpine skiing as they won the silver and bronze respectively in the slalom. In addition to celebrating this historical day, we will be premiering Billy Kidd's new Hall of Fame tribute video. Watch this video, with Billy, for the first time ever. This event will take place at the Sebastian in Vail Village.

Join us at The Sebastian - Vail on Thursday, February 8th at 5:30 pm with a cash bar & mingling. At 6 pm, we will start the program.

We've had a lot of photos shared recently of "settlement cones" so we're tackling it in a ! Settlement cones around trees and bushes are a sign that the snowpack has consolidated due to the snow grains changing shape and the snowpack deforming due to gravity. This is a slow settling process compared with snow collapsing or whumpfing.

Gorrono Ranch, Ski School, and Cubs Camp will also open on December 2nd.

🚨 The ski resort will delay opening this season due to recent and forecasted warm weather.

“Our top notch team and sophisticated snowmaking system have taken advantage of every snowmaking opportunity, which is why this was a close call in the first place.”- said Brandon Green, Director of Snowmaking

The resort now targets opening on December 2nd or 8th, weather permitting. An update on the opening day will be provided on Monday, November 27th.

“We pride ourselves on opening with a quality product and wall-to-wall coverage that provides a fun and safe skiing experience.” Said Patrick Latcham, VP of Sales and Marketing

In the interim, the resort will continue to take advantage of every snow-making opportunity.

“When we open, the following runs will be accessible: Village Bypass to Lower Boomerang, access in and out of Gorrono, Upper Misty Maiden, The Meadows, both Magic Carpets, and ski- out access from the Village Parking Garage via Double Cabins. This will be around 60 acres of terrain.” -added Green.

For everyone’s safety, please note that all access to the resort remains closed during this time. This includes hiking, downhill skiing, uphill skinning, and sledding.

Services will be available on opening day. Guests can contact the Mountain Sales team via phone, email, or by stopping by any ticket window to request a refund on ski school or lift ticket products. The avalanche forecast map continues to show green or LOW (1 of 5) danger across the state. In some areas, there’s simply not enough snow cover to create a problem, and the recent storm did little to change that. Where there is continuous snow, conditions are generally safe except for isolated wind-loaded areas above treeline on northerly and easterly slopes. This picture, taken near Cottonwood Pass on Nov 7, highlights wind-loaded areas where it may be possible to trigger a small slide. You can find the full details at colorado.gov/avalanche.
