Another great week in the Alaska Range! Skiers and guides skied steep and deep Alaska lines from their base camp in the Range last week. Plenty of fresh snow fell during their time there, and when the storm broke the plastered snowy peaks surrounding camp were stunning!

Come learn from the best at our Moab Crack Clinic! We have one more two-day clinic this spring: May 3-4.

If you’re a sport climber or already dabbling in traditional climbing, working on your crack climbing skills could open up a new world of routes; like desert towers or alpine granite.

The sandstone cliffs of Moab are the ideal classroom for learning the basics. Our guides will start at the bottom, covering the fundamentals of crack technique, providing feedback and allowing you to refine newly learned skills over the course of this two-day course.

Temps are warming and snow is melting! Spring is one of the best times for via ferratas. Vibrant green aspens, snow-capped mountains, and several waterfalls along the routes.

Opening date for the Ouray Via Ferrata is set for May 1, and the Telluride Via Ferrata could be open May 15. Of course, these opening dates are conditions dependent, but they are drying fast!

Today our first Ski Camp team set off from Talkeetna into the heart of the Alaska Range, where, for the next week, they’ll set up a glacier base camp and explore some of the best skiing in North America.

Shout out to our friends at Talkeetna Air Taxi for providing the wings all season long 🙌🏻, as well as our guides:

We just wrapped up our last avalanche course of the 2024/2025 winter season! Thank you to all of the students who joined us this year to further their avalanche education and practice life-saving skills in the backcountry.

We love having the opportunity to support our local community through Recreation Level 1 courses, Avalanche Awareness days, and Companion Rescue courses. We had the chance to work with local elementary and high school students, as well as adults of all ages and skill levels.

We are proud to use Silverton Avalanche School curriculum, an American Avalanche Association provider.

We hope to see you in one of our courses next year!

Standing at 18,491', Pico de Orizaba is an active volcano with a glacier cap, and is also the third highest peak in North America.

Starting in Mexico City, our March 8 team, led by guides and , traveled to the mountain. Along the way they summited two other peaks, explored an ancient city, and got to enjoy the rich culture.

Then waking up at 2 a.m. and fighting high winds, our team recently stood on top. They are now down, celebrated and off to their next adventures.

Congratulations, team, and strong work!

Back-to-back summits of Puncak Jaya, commonly known as Carstensz Pyramid! 🏔️

On March 9, Kurt and Kristina, lead by Mountain Trip guide , stood atop the highest mountain peak of an island on Earth.

While Carstensz sits at a lower elevation of 16,024’ (4,884 m), its technicality and the logistics of even getting to its base make it one of the most challenging of the world’s Seven Summits.

Nice work, team! 💪🏻

La cumbre de Volcán La Malinche! 🗻

The 12-person Newberry Expedition, lead by Mountain Trip guides and , is psyched after crushing their recent acclimatization hike (9 miles with 4,500’ of vertical gain) up La Malinche. The inactive volcano, located in the states of Tlaxcala and Puebla in Mexico, sits at 14,636’ (4,462 m).

Post-hike the team has been relaxing at their lodge, learning about Mexico City and the local culture, eating fantastic food (lots of tacos!), and hanging with dogs that live at the lodge—several of which followed them from 5 a.m. to the summit and back!

Today, they’re headed out for their main objective, Pico de Orizaba! The team plans to make a summit push on Friday. Wish them luck! 🙌🏻

Telluride’s Guides to the World’s Mountains

The premier choice for experienced guides on the world's big mountains and the only AMGA Accredited Program in Southwest Colorado, offering professional guiding in the Telluride region and to the great summits of the world.

Mountain Trip has been in the business of Guiding Denali Expeditions since 1973 and leads expeditions to all of the 7 summits (Mount Everest, Aconcagua, Denali, Kilimanjaro, Mount Elbrus, Mount Vinson, Carstensz Pyramid). We also offer custom private expeditions and training to help you achieve your goals from learning to climb to reaching the summit of Mount Everest.

Our office in the town of Telluride is home base for our international programs as well as adventures in the local San Juan mountain range and desert Southwest. Locally we have winter and summer guiding programs. Summer programs include rock climbing and instruction, Telluride’s famous Via Ferrata, alpine climbing, 14’ers, backpacking and trekking trips. In the winter we trade out for ski’s and ice axes and guide backcountry ski trips, instruct avalanche courses, and guide ice climbers on the wide array of world class routes in our area including Bridal Veil Falls and the Ames Ice Hose as well as climbing in the Ouray Ice Park.

Mountain Trip is owned by Todd Rutledge and Bill Allen, long time guides and reluctant business owners.
