Friday from the Field: Updates on US Elephant Imports
In the spirit of Good Friday, USFW dropped a surprise announcement of new rules and requirements to import Elephants to the US. We have been able to acquire answers from USFW on how this will affect the import process going forward. Full details will soon be on our website. Here are the important facts:
1) Beginning May 1st, 2024, Range countries must provide an annual certification regarding elephant management, status of elephants and the hunting programs in the country. This will supplement the Operator Enhancement reports that are part of the current requirements for Import Applications.
2) Beginning in 2026, USFW will only allow imports from countries that are deemed CITES Category 1. This means they not only abide by CITES Convention policies, but also have enacted laws that support these policies. Current Category 1 Countries include Namibia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, an Tanzania. Botswana is currently Category 2 and is working on moving to Category 1.
3)Elephants hunted before May 1st, 2024 will be processed under the current requirements, i.e. annual report from range country will not be needed.
In short, Elephants CAN still be imported to the US. The process for the hunters and outfitters will not change, and range countries are already putting processes in place for the annual reports.
