NOTORIOUS CHINESE RHINO HORN TRAFFICKER YANGSEN FENG GETS 15 YEARS

A notorious rhino horn trafficker and repeat offender who attempted to corrupt and bribe a police officer last year, has been sentenced to 15 years in a South African prison.
Yangsen Feng, a Johannesburg-based Chinese national, will effectively spend 10 years of the sentence behind bars, following a plea and sentence agreement announced in the Randburg magistrates court yesterday (Monday 21 2020).
Feng, who had separate previous convictions from 2015 and 2018 for the illegal possession and transportation of rhino horn, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for counts 1-3, illegally being in possession of rhino horns and dealing in rhino horns, of which two years was suspended for a period of five years.
He was further sentenced to an additional five years in prison on count 4, the corruption charge, of which three years were suspended for five years.
In March 2019, while facing fresh charges for wildlife trafficking, Feng offered a gratuity of R100 000 to a police officer to recommend the court grant him bail and release from custody, plus the promise of another R50 000 after his release to make the case docket disappear.
However, Feng’s offer of financial bait back-fired, and a sting operation was approved.
The operation led to three other suspects including Feng's girlfriend being arrested, and the money which was intended as the kickback to the officer, confiscated.
According to HAWKS’ media spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale, Feng and his accomplices had hatched a plan to rob the police of the bribe money once the transaction was made.
Feng’s girlfriend and accomplice, Lui Li Hong, was arrested during the sting after handing over the money to an undercover cop.
It is understood that Hong, who had been previously convicted in 2018 on illegal rhino horn charges, plus illegal possession of ivory, illegal possession of drugs and illegal immigration, will be deported.
It is not clear if she was expelled in 2018 and illegally re-entered the country after she was ordered to pay R60,000 or face two years in prison, or if she had remained in the country illegally until her re-arrest last year.
Five rhino horns were recovered by the police during the operation.
