2021 Bow South Expedition, Kayaking The Lower Colorado River

2021 Bow South Expedition, Kayaking The Lower Colorado River Bow South Expeditions offers guided paddling trips down the longest remaining natural stretch of the We might also spot some of the wildlife along the river.

Bow South Expeditions offers multi-day guided kayak tours of the lower Colorado River through Imperial National Wildlife Refuge and Picacho State Recreation Area. We have 2 to 4 days trips with a variety of activities to choose from for you and your friends, family, or business retreat. The lower Colorado River through Imperial National Wildlife Refuge and Picacho State Recreation Area is the long

est remaining natural stretch of this section of the river. In this area you can see what the Colorado River looked like before the construction of the various dams that changed the ecology. Old mines, ghost towns, abandoned steamship stops, and almost forgotten backwater lakes dot this area and are ripe for exploration. Wildlife that can be found include desert bighorn sheep, coyotes, beaver, bobcats, wild burros, osprey, owls, hawks, and eagles. Our multi-day trips we leave from Walters Camp, CA, and we paddle 14 miles into Imperial NWR and down to one of the boat-in camps in Picacho SRA. While there, we'll explore that many reed passages, old mines, ghost towns, and backwater lakes that this area is famous for. On the last day of our trip we'll paddle the remaining 12 to 15 miles down to the end of our adventure at Fishers Landing, AZ. It's been too long since I've been able to do an update, but there is new news to share with more updates to come for the Bow South Expedition.

This is encouraging news. The work performed by Pronatura Noreste is amazing considering they have the hardest part of restoring the ecosystem along the Colorado River through Mexico. The river runs completely dry after Morelos Dam. My time spent with Pronatura during the final days of the 2021 Bow South Expedition was an incredible experience. Their dedication to restoring, even just in part, the ecology of the Colorado River delta in Mexico is both incredible in their effort, and heart breaking considering that they have no river to work with.

Here is the promised video of me running the rock weir above the US/Mexico border on November 27. The spot that I ran the weir is a 3 foot drop. The front of the kayak plunged underwater almost all the way to the cockpit of a 17 foot long sea kayak.
Included in this video is a tour of what the rock weir looks like on river left and river right. I spent a minute lining up where I was going to run it next to a rock pour over a bit left of the middle of the river. When I ran the weir in 2019 I went right of the rock pour over and bent my rudder and busted a rudder cable. I was pretty weary of making the same mistake twice.
