Turns out the third time was the charm for our local area. The clouds finally cleared out and the lights showed up around 10:45-11:00 pm. This was the capture from a crowd favorite Kurt Gardner Photography Gallery. I'm really happy many of you got to see *something*.

Did you miss them? Do you want to see them? There will be more opportunities in the future. However, solar storms are wildly unpredictable. You'll want to download a variety of aurora apps that keep track of conditions in real time. Many of these will alert you when your location could see the lights. Despite better technology, you still need some luck to see them. The longer you're out, the more likely you'll spot them.

I stayed out until 10:15 pm yesterday in a rural part of Oneida County. I saw a very faint glow of green in the northern horizon. Your phone will capture way more color than your eyes.

I'll continue to look out for future opportunities to spot the lights. We're in the middle of a very active solar cycle, so it's possible this could happen again.

It’s almost Milky Way season!

The best time to see the Milky Way is during the Milky Way season, which goes from February to October, usually between 00:00 and 5:00, and on nights with a new moon. This, however, will vary depending on the hemisphere, your latitude, and other factors like the moon phase.

The Adirondack Park has some of the darkest skies in this part of the country. Much of the Adirondack Park is classified as a 2 on the Bortle Scale. The Bortle scale is a nine-level numeric scale that measures the night sky’s brightness. The scale ranges from Class 1, the darkest skies available on Earth, through Class 9, inner-city skies. The Milky Way becomes visible at 3 or 4 on the Bortle scale.
