Leave the leaves!!! 🍁 🍂🐛🪱🕷️🪳🪲🐞

When we talk about NoDig H&G “leave the leaves” what does that do?

Each community paves the way for the next to thrive, creating a chain reaction of habitat adaptation.
Leaf litter and humus layer boost sandy soil regeneration.
Consider this when planning your landscaping and before cleaning those garden beds.
When autumn arrives, many of us reach for our rakes to tidy up fallen leaves. However, there’s a growing movement encouraging us to “leave the leaves” instead. This simple act can have a profound impact on our gardens and the environment.
Fallen leaves create a natural mulch that helps retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and provide essential nutrients as they decompose. This process not only enriches the soil but also supports a diverse range of wildlife. Insects, birds, and small mammals find shelter and food in the leaf litter, promoting biodiversity.
Additionally, the humus layer formed by decomposed leaves improves soil structure and boosts sandy soil regeneration. By leaving the leaves, we can reduce the need for additional mulch and fertilizers, saving time and resources.

It's COMB JELLY SEASON!!

Come see them after sunset on the Florida Bucket List Kayak Tour!

These ancient invertebrates are harmless and DO NOT STING! Their little "combs" refract sunlight into the color spectrum and are bioluminescent! As you paddle your kayak, you'll see glowing blue "orbs" in the water after sunset.

On Indigenous Peoples' Day, we honor and celebrate Indigenous peoples, cultures, traditions, and their unique connections to the lands and waters we all call home.

Long before European explorers sailed to this continent, Native Americans made this land their home, some for thousands of years before the United States was founded. Native Americans are the historical stewards of many public lands, including many of the lands that USFWS manages and oversees. We recognize their efforts by continuing the conservation legacy they started.

Happy Indigenous Peoples Day!!

We acknowledge the Timucua and Ais tribes, the pre-Columbian people who lived on the North/Central East Coast of Florida and the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.

There are so many other nations that lived in Florida before European arrival such as the Calusa, Mayaimi and Miccosukee (just to name a few).

The Miccosukee still live in Florida! Visit them in the Florida Everglades, book a tour with Buffalo Tigers Everglades Airboat Rides and learn about the indigenous Miccosukee history and culture!

Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge law enforcement officers are closing the gates of the refuge today and we are pausing operations ahead of Hurricane Milton.

We are located on the Atlantic Coast, however we are in the middle of the cone and Hurricane Milton is forecast to be a powerful Category 1-2 hurricane when it exits the state. We are preparing for power outage, 8-12” of rain, a 2-4’ storm surge (even in the Indian River Lagoon), hurricane forced sustained winds and tornadoes.

Please pray for our two legged, four legged, furry, feathered, scaly, swimming, buggy, underground, leafy, mossy, Florida family!!

Please especially pray for those on the Gulf Coast as they prepare for their second direct hit from a major hurricane in as many weeks.
