Happy ! January’s Miracle Kid is Wyatt! Twenty weeks into her pregnancy, Lori, Wyatt’s mother, learned that her son had fetal complications which would require the care of NICU specialists and various other physicians. With this knowledge, Wyatt’s parents decided to deliver him at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center where he stayed for 21 days.

Within his first 8 years of life Wyatt has been diagnosed with several conditions and has experienced various issues. At 6 months old Wyatt was diagnosed with optic nerve hypoplasia, leading to bilateral blindness. Wyatt has also been diagnosed with a severe form of epilepsy, bilateral hearing loss, chronic lung disease, cardiac defects, kidney swelling, and sleep apnea. Due to his conditions Wyatt is nonambulatory and requires a feeding tube.

A large part of Wyatt’s care at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center is the Pediatric Palliative Care team. They help to coordinate Wyatt’s care and ensure he is treated as a whole individual.

According to his parents, Wyatt is a happy 8 year old who can be described as “always hav[ing] a smile on his face” and is “glad to have people around him”.

Happy ! At four years old, Sadie was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition causing the pancreas to no longer produce insulin. In order to monitor and manage
her blood sugar levels Sadie required numerous finger sticks and insulin injections each day.

Following her initial stay at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, Sadie and her family worked closely with a diabetes nurse and a pediatric endocrinologist at JHCC.

Now at 7 years old, Sadie is thriving and is able to successfully manage her type 1 diabetes. Sadie has learned how to understand the signals her body sends regarding her blood sugar levels and utilizes a continuous glucose monitoring system to check her blood sugar. To provide her body with insulin Sadie uses an insulin pump.

Happy ! In December 2020, Juliana was born six weeks prematurely and with a heart malformation called double outlet right ventricle (DOVT). This is where the two major arteries stemming from the heart both come out of the right ventricle. Not only was Juliana diagnosed with DOVT she also had a condition causing her stomach and esophagus to be disconnected called esophageal atresia.

Due to her conditions, Juliana spent the first 11 months of her life in the NICU at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. In March 2021, Juliana underwent surgery to fix her esophageal atresia and in September 2021, she had major heart surgery to repair the DOVT. As she grows, Juliana will continue to need surgeries to attach her esophagus to her stomach. However, today Juliana continues to thrive, and is described as a “happy and confident 3-year-old”.

Happy ! September’s Miracle Kid is Matthew! At 5 years old Matthew came home from school with a stomachache. However, his parents found blood in his stool and rushed him to the local emergency room. Here blood tests revealed the presence of E. coli, causing Matthew to be transferred to John’s Hopkins Children’s Center.

Within days Matthew’s kidneys, heart, and lungs began to fail requiring his placement on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and peritoneal dialysis. Through various surgeries and immunotherapies Matthew’s heart began to work again. However, the E. coli infection had spread and killed the majority of his intestines. He had most of his bowels removed. After surgery, Matthew experienced severe life-threating blood loss that needed to be fixed with another extremely risky surgery. Matthew survived and eventually was taken off both ECMO and dialysis!

Matthew’s journey has not been easy. He experienced additional bleeding issues and a stroke which has left him with left side paralysis. However, he is currently in rehab and is making great progress. He has been able to stand for two minutes unassisted and his parents are confident in his ability to make a great recovery!
