A busy week with old friends and new found our fish beginning to transition. We caught most of them in our summer pattern and a few in our fall pattern.
As always we are following the food and big movements are beginning.
Thanks to this week's fishermen--good people and good fish.
A full moon is on the way and I hope bad weather doesn't hinder...
Following one of the best new moons we've experienced it was expected that the frenzied bite would fade and return to normal.
Less than perfect winds required perfect presentations this week. Our friends adjusted and had numbers but only a couple fives were boated. The two to four pounders continued to show regularly. Best day this week was 45 smallies in six hours.
Fun days on the water.
A brief halfday outing with repeat fisherman netted over 40 smallies. All on spots we haven't fish since June. Big fish 5.02.
Quiet Cove jigheads (available at Jacks, D and R or at Quiet Cove direct) were very beneficial.
The real MVP is the moon phase. More talk about that when this slows down. Maybe December!?!
Sounds like a broken record but another pair of fishermen not only get big numbers but also big fish. 5.24 was biggest out of the 35 caught. Father and daughter were very efficient in the summer method and very fun to fish with. Great day!
On July 1 a friend from Arkansas had a smallie at 6.80 and on July 31 a friend from Texas had a 6.35. What a way to start and finish a great month.
Lots of quality and another fun and productive day. All this on a halfday charter.
The youngsters get involved in last two morning outings. Fun stuff with mostly smallmouth but a couple drum did crash the party.

An old friend from Indiana and a new friend with Indiana ties set out for Day Two of midsummer smallmouth fishing. As you know from yesterday's post Day One was unbelievably good.
And Day Two did not disappoint as a 5.96 lber came on board with one other over 5 and three others over 4. And we had numbers again with personal bests each day!
Fun stuff...
Day One of a two-day smallmouth trip couldn't have gone much better. Fifty or so smallies were caught with biggest weighing 5.60 lbs. Several others topped 4 lbs.
New areas really paid off today and we're looking forward to Day Two.
New friends endured east, south, west and northwest winds and then rain. The fish continued to cooperate throughout our 4 hours. Very good numbers and, as you can see, quality smallmouth!
I lucked out with good fishermen again...
A four hour morning trip got us between 25 and 30 hookups. The smallies were certainly very willing to accept our offerings.
The full moon has them aggressive...
Big numbers (I mean really big numbers) of quality fish brought onboard.
Our fishermen featured here kept our hot streak going.

New friends battled high winds, rain and plenty of SMALLMOUTH! Big numbers with lots of quality made the wet day worthwhile.

New friends from Missouri adjusted well to our clear water methods. On a not-so-perfect day they had three over 5 lbs and six more over 4. Big fish of the day was 5.85.

A new and very busy week begins tomorrow.
On day one of this week we hosted grandpa and grandson for a morning outing. On day two an old friend stops in for a day of really good smallmouth fishing.
The southwest wind today was perfect.
5.87 lbs is biggest in this group of pics but several more were over 4 lbs.
Quiet Cove's BeaverTail and da Coach worked well so far this week.

Three family parties fished this week and it was a good week--good people and good fish.
Numbers and quality on the same day! A 6.80 and a 5.20 were the "bigs" with more over 4.5 lbs. What a five fish total for our father/son team from Missouri. Fun!
A week of very good numbers as long as we were able to chase smallies on our preferred lake...
However, two days of violent wind forced us to safe havens.
A week of fishing with fun people and we were able to get on our first choice three out of five days.
Expecting more very good results next week.
Leftover rollers gave way to a no wind situation. Very good finesse fishing couple were short a 4.5 lber to get the magical 25!
The way it ended was another 24 lb bag two consecutive days. Big fish today was a postspawn 5.65.
We are creeping closer to the end of the spawn but not yet!

We went from very high winds early in the week to slick on Friday. Power fishing to finesse--we fished to fit the conditions.
And we are finding more and more postspawners filling our travel lanes.
Soon, we will have all of them on the same page--can't wait!
A totally different kind of fun...
While Saturday gave us only 15 smallies, three were over 5 lbs. (One over 6 and one nonkeeper) Fun? You bet!
Monday gave us over 35 smallies with five over 4.5 lbs but no 5 lbers. Fun? You bet!
Quiet Cove's Coach, Shadder and a soft plastic in the developmental stage are part of the system this week.

Lots of fish this week though they didn't always come easy! Big smallies today but nothing compares with having youngsters on board with a rod in their hand and a smile on their face.
Trimester 2 started wild. Biggest smallie this week was a 6.98 lber (Can we round up to 7 lbs?).
Big of smallmouth on Charlevoix and mixed bags of smallies, lake trout, cisco on the big lake.
The sooner we get thru the smallmouth spawn the better. All of our fish will be in the attack mode at that point. Recently, we're fishing one way for the prespawners and a different way for the postspawners.
Many tournaments this weekend. As we hear of more accidents on our congested waters throughout the country--all boaters please be safe.
Here's wishing all an enjoyable and safe Memorial Day weekend. And let us, on this kickoff to summer, not lose sight of this holiday's intent--to honor the fallen serving our country.
The longest first trimester of smallmouth fishing in NW Michigan has ended. The first smallie came on board on March 3 and they have continued throughout the winter pattern ad well as prespawn.
More over 6.5 lbs than ever were caught and likewise with those over 5 lbs. The single day highlight was a five-fish bag just shy of 30 lbs.
I look forward to the second trimester of 2024.

Postspawn smallies cruising the bluegill beds create a good time for annual visitors. Four miles north we had prespawners suspended off the break.
Fun days spent with good people!
An empty parking lot is unusual in May.
A couple smallies were over 6 lbs with none of the others over 4 lbs. Quiet Cove's Deep Diving Jerkbait was the star (again).
And then devoted some time to amass a limit of perch up to 14"...

The smallmouth cooperated on two different lakes. Big fish so far this week was a 5.95 lber.
Quiet Cove Jerkbaits were the all stars again this week. The pursuit continues tomorrow.
You know you've had a good day when a 4.95 lber is the one that keeps you from a truly stellar total. Out of 28 fish two were over 6 lbs and two more were well over 5 lbs.
