It's National Plant a Flower Day. A great day to celebrate Lady Bird Johnson, First Lady and wife of President Lyndon B. Johnson. Lady Bird oversaw the planting of blue bonnets—the state flower of Texas—along the state's many roadways. Thanks to her, spring in Texas has been appearing in beautiful blue waves for nearly 70 years.

As our national parks have come into the national spotlight, we've decided to start a series that recognizes some of our favorite parks and the important role they play in our national (and natural!) heritage. Today, we start at Badlands National Park in South Dakota. Designated as a national park in 1939, Badlands is comprised of 380 square miles of rugged, yet beautiful terrain. The park is best known for its many fossil beds, dramatic landscapes, and iconic, mixed-grass prairie.
