Gilchrist County's HISTORY AT A GLANCE |

February 1943

Schools in Bell and Trenton were closed for 2 days for the teachers to register Gilchrist citizens for their second (World War II) Ration Book. Citizens had to bring their first Ration Book known as the Sugar and Coffee Book to register for their second book. Trenton’s registration was held at the gym and Bell’s was held at the school. Professors L.E. Edenfield of Bell and J.D. Kirkland of Trenton were to oversee registrations. Superintendent Moore reported that the bus drivers were to use the time to clean their bus and students living on farms should use the time to help their families catch up on farm work.

January 1985

Gilchrist County Chamber of Commerce President Frank Grant presented Citizen of the Year award to Eugenia Martin. At the time, Martin was in her seventeenth year of teaching business education classes at Trenton High School. She was a very active sponsor of FBLA and several of her students went on to be Future Business Leaders of America state officers while she was their sponsor. Clif Bradley was the incoming president and Jim Troke was the Master of Ceremonies for the annual banquet.

The County Commissioners were Frank Handley, J. T. Everett, I. P. Philpot, J. O. Thomas, and M. L. Langford. The first County Commission meeting was held in the old two story school building where the current courthouse now stands.

Each District had a Justice of the Peace, they were M. T. Jones, A. J. Haile, M. G. Akins, C. G. Thomas and E. C. Sapp. W. J. Matthews of Trenton was the County Judge, Gordon Philpot of Bell was the Tax Collector, John W. Jones of Bell was the Supervisor of Registration (Supervisor of Elections), and James E. Willis of Trenton became the Clerk of Circuit Court.
Mrs. Murray Johnson of Wilcox became the Superintendent of Public Instruction (Superintendent of Schools), School Board members were Elijah Sapp, R. C. Lang, and Henry Everett.
