If you are planning a trip to Multnomah Falls and the Gorge you should be aware that the section of the Historic Columbia River Highway (HCRH) between Wahkeena Falls and Multnomah Falls will be closed to all traffic - including bicycles and vehicles - from October 1 until Memorial Day 2025.

But don’t worry! Visitors will still be able to access all the breathtaking attractions along the road! Here are the key details:

• Vehicles traveling eastbound on HCRH can access destinations such as Vista House, Bridal Veil, and Wahkeena Falls prior to the closure. There is no access to Multnomah Falls by heading eastbound on the Historic Highway. Eastbound vehicles will be turned around at the Wahkeena Falls Trailhead, just before reaching Multnomah Falls. Please note that parking is limited at Wahkeena Falls.

• Vehicles traveling westbound on HCRH can access destinations such as Horsetail Falls and Ainsworth State Park prior to the closure. Westbound vehicles will be turned around at the Multnomah Falls Lodge.

• Drivers to Multnomah Falls may park in the lot at Exit 31 from I-84. I-84 is not impacted by this construction. You can also access Sasquatch Shuttle’s paid parking lot via Exit 35.

• Other sections of the Historic Highway will remain open during construction.

Planning a trip to Multnomah Falls? Planned Fall 2024 construction on Historic Columbia River Highway between Wahkeena and Multnomah Falls is now underway. Be sure to visit the Explore Troutdale website to get the latest updates on the the best way to experience the falls.

Here is some important information to bear in mind:

The Historic Highway is open to traffic, but you should expect delays as flaggers direct traffic between Wahkeena and Multnomah Falls. The best way to visit Multnomah Falls continues to be via Exit 31 on Interstate 84 or take transit.

Beginning on October 1, 2024 through Memorial Day 2025, Historic Columbia River Highway will be closed to all traffic from Wahkeena Falls to just just west of Multnomah Falls. There will be no access to Multnomah Falls for vehicles traveling eastbound on the Historic Highway. You can learn more by visiting the Oregon DOT website at https://i84gorgeconstruction.org

The most popular natural attraction in the entire state of Oregon is Multnomah Falls, one of the tallest year-round waterfalls in the United States at 620 feet. More than 2 million visitors take in the views each year. Due to the popularity and remote nature of Multnomah Falls and The Gorge, visitor...

⚠️Update on the Microwave Tower Fire: the closure is still in effect near the Twin Tunnels segment of the Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail. Other parts of the trail are still accessible.

ICYMI - The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area closure, associated with the Microwave Tower Fire, remains in effect on National Forest System lands. The objective of the closure is to proactively protect public and firefighter safety from the smoldering historic waste disposal site that has been emitting smoke and noxious gases. The disposal site was once used as a place for orchard waste, automobiles, and other debris, prior to the property becoming National Forest System lands.

The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area has implemented an air monitoring contract and results will be shared when available. Please be aware that exposure to smoke can have adverse health effects, especially for individuals with known respiratory issues. We ask that the public respect the area closure while ongoing mitigation work continues.
