Nearly 1.2 million North Carolina acres are projected to be converted into subdivisions and strip malls by 2040. This rapid loss of farmland—second only to Texas—underscores the urgent need to conserve our agricultural land.

Together, we can continue to permanently protect our farms, ensuring properties remain undeveloped forever, regardless of who owns them.

You may be surprised to know that in 1944, no one had seen a deer in this area for more than 50 years...

Sometime between 1890-1900, before anyone tracked deer populations, people started to become well aware of the absence of NC deer.

By 1925, the Chief Forester for the Vanderbilt Estate in Western NC, had taken it upon himself to create a thriving herd of 1200 White-Tailed Deer. He obtained this original herd from Florida, New York, and possibly Wisconsin.

In 1936, Mr. R.J. Reynolds purchased 140 of these deer to start his own thriving herd at the Reynolds' Estate. Within ten years, this herd had grown to 1650 deer.

In 1944, NC Wildlife officially launched the first "Deer Restoration Project" as a trial. 126 White-Tailed Deer were trapped on the Reynold's Reserve and brought to the what was then known as the "Uwharrie Refuge".

On the newly established "Uwharrie Refuge"...
Absolutely no hunting was allowed.

This trial run turned out to be a great success - securing funding for other Deer Restoration Projects throughout the state... leading to our current population of over one million deer.

The Uwharries are now some of the best Public Gamelands in the
Southeast for hunting White-Tailed Deer.

“Uwharrie National Forest historically had deer when nobody else did. It’s got good deer numbers now and some big (bucks), if a hunter wants to go deep to get away from normal hunting pressure" said Biologist Greg Queen of the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission.
- Carolina Sportsman

We would like to thank Rupert Medford, a Biologist with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission for taking the time to send us this information regarding the Uwharrie Deer Restoration Project.

🦇Happy Bat Week!🦇

The Uwharrie National Forest is home to several old gold mining locations. These old mine shafts and tunnels have become the perfect habitat for bats!

"Of the 17 species that occur in North Carolina, three are federally endangered and one is federally threatened. Bats are relatively long-lived, some surviving up to 20 or even 30 years in the wild." - NC Wildlife

"Bat Week is an international, annual celebration designed to raise awareness about the need for bat conservation. Bats are amazing creatures that are vital to the health of our natural world and economy. Although we may not always see them, bats are hard at work all around the world each night - eating tons of insects, pollinating flowers, and spreading seeds that grow new plants and trees."
