Piano students are taught music theory, playing techniques and performance, and are encouraged to seek scholarship opportunities as they achieve higher levels of proficiency. Voice students learn correct breathing techniques and vocal production and performance presence. Many of Dr. Barnes' piano and vocal students have obtained college scholarships and successfully auditioned for theater and musi
cal performances. Fashion design classes are intended for students whose proficiency levels range from beginner through advanced fashion design. Students learn correct sewing practices and couture technique. Other specialty classes that highlight the fashion industry, such as historic dress and hat design, will be taught by industry experts and periodically offered throughout the year. Lessons taught in design classes are more than just instructions on creating one garment. Students will learn techniques that will transfer to a multitude of patterns, styles and design. All classes; music, voice and design are conducted by Lynn Barnes, PhD, who has 46 years of experience in the music instruction profession. Lynn Barnes is a dress historian with a research and academic emphasis on Gilded Age. Dr. Barnes holds a master’s degree in international trade and quality perception of outsourced apparel from San Francisco State University and a PhD from The Ohio State University in historic dress. She has held faculty positions at Bluffton University, Eastern Kentucky University and West Virginia University. She is currently a dress history and maritime history consultant.
