11 Fascinating Places In Arizona That Transport You Straight To The Old West

Tubac Presidio State Historic Park and Museum

“Tubac Presidio State Historic Park is Arizona’s first state park, and boy, does it have stories to tell.

Established in 1752 as a Spanish presidio, Tubac has seen more action than a telenovela marathon. The park features the ruins of the presidio, a museum chock-full of artifacts, and Arizona’s first printing press.

That’s right, folks – this is where Arizona’s first newspaper, “The Weekly Arizonian,” was printed.

It was probably full of hard-hitting headlines like “Cactus: Friend or Foe?” and “Top 10 Ways to Avoid Dysentery on the Trail.”

Don’t miss the Anza Trail, which follows the route of Juan Bautista de Anza’s 1775 expedition to establish San Francisco.

It’s like a really long, really old version of Google Maps, minus the traffic updates and with 100% more chance of encountering a rattlesnake.”

7 Close-Knit Towns To Visit In The United States.
#1 - Tubac, Arizona
“Close-knit towns always have something that draws their residents together. For Tubac, it's the arts. In fact, USA Today has dubbed Tubac "Best Small Town Arts Scene" many times. It all started when American landscape artist Dale Nichols came to Tubac to paint. He attracted other landscape artists like Hugh Cabot and Hal Empie Gallery. In 1948, Nichols opened an art school, and growth hasn’t stopped since.

The town's many galleries feature artwork and decorative pottery, as well as furniture, jewelry, clothing, and items for the home. Visitors can check out some art at the K Newby Gallery or buy intriguing crafts at Old Presidio Traders on Tubac Road. Outdoors, the Tubac Presidio State Historic Park and Museum has fun, interactive displays for the whole family. Hungry? Elvira’s Restaurant serves "modern Mexican" fare, perfect for a hearty dinner.”

These 11 Towns In Arizona Were Ranked Among US Favorites In 2024
“Tubac is another Arizona town ranking among America’s favorites for a compelling blend of history, artistry, and personality. Spanish soldiers built the first presidio here in 1752. These days, artists work in over 100 galleries housed in old adobe buildings between the Santa Rita and Tumacacori Mountains.

Glass panels at Tubac Presidio State Historic Park—Arizona's first state park—show the original fort's foundation right under visitors' feet. Rangers lead tours through restored buildings packed with frontier artifacts. Sitting just four miles south, Tumacácori National Historical Park is another tourist hotspot in the area. Its three mission churches still stand from Spanish colonial days, their thick walls keeping the desert heat at bay.

Artists first discovered Tubac in the 1940s, transforming empty buildings into working studios as word spread about the town's natural beauty. Now, the historic district buzzes with galleries showing everything from oil paintings to handmade jewelry. Some artists work in converted barns, others in old adobe homes. The Tubac Center of the Arts puts on new shows every few months, bringing fresh work to its main gallery.

The Santa Cruz River keeps things green year-round. Birds fill the cottonwoods while hikers follow the Juan Bautista de Anza Trail through the valley. Every February since 1964, the Festival of the Arts takes over town—Arizona's oldest outdoor art market. Small cafes serve chiles rellenos and enchiladas between the galleries. Outside each adobe courtyard, the sound of Spanish still mixes with English, just like it has for centuries.”
