Today, we honor Indigenous Peoples’ Day and celebrate the rich cultural heritage and enduring traditions of the Indigenous communities who have called the Tucson area home for centuries. Our city is deeply enriched by their histories, stories, and contributions. In fact, did you know the name “Tucson” is derived from the O’odham word S-cuk Son, which roughly translates to “base of the black [mountain]”? It was also the name of the village near the base of what is now called “A” Mountain. 🌄
As you explore Tucson, we invite you to learn about the profound connection these communities have with this land and visit sites that highlight their legacy. Join us in celebrating the vibrant Indigenous cultures that continue to enrich our region. 🧡☀️

Repost: Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum Are you a member of the prickly pear fan club yet? If not, what are you waiting for?!

The most common Opuntia species in the Sonoran Desert is the Engelmann prickly pear (Opuntia englemanii), identifiable by its broad flat green pads. The pads are covered in bumps called areoles, which produce new pads, spines, and flowers. Areoles are structures that differentiate cacti from other plants. Young pads produce small leaves from the areoles that drop off as tough spines develop. This species typically grows 4-6 feet tall and wide (with some individuals growing beyond 10 feet!) and can live well over 20 years. The flowers are generally yellow, sometimes reddish/orange, with each bloom only lasting one day.

The sweet fruits (or tunas) of the prickly pear can be eaten raw, after the glochids are removed or burned off, or processed to make jams, sauces, syrups, fermented beverages, and candies. The pads (or nopales) are also used in a variety of dishes. Birds, insects, and mammals also feast on this tasty plant throughout the seasons. Prickly pears also make great shelter and shade for rodents, reptiles, and birds, with packrats often digging their home dens at their base.

Join the fan club by learning to identify the Englemann's prickly pear and then point it out loudly and proudly to all your friends and family when out hiking!
