There are reports that there may be some natural habitat for the Cardon Cactus in AZ, in the very SW border of the state, but they tend to do better closer to the Sea of Cortez region.

Saguaros aren't the only cacti blooming right now; its columnar cousin the Cardon also flowers around the same time. But the Cardon has a super cool adaptation, it has multiple flower varieties. They produce hermaphroditic flowers (containing functional stamen and pistils), male flowers (containing functional stamen but sterile pistil genes), female flowers (containing functional pistils but sterile stamen genes), and neuter flowers (containing both sterile stamen and sterile pistil genes)! The columnar cacti also tend to produce more than double the number of flowers compared to its Saguaro cousin and upwards of ten times more than its Organ Pipe cousin!
