On December 17, 1947, Cherokee actor and producer Wes Studi was born in Nofire Hollow near Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Speaking only the Cherokee language until he began primary school at the age of five, Studi enlisted in the Oklahoma National Guard at 17, after which he volunteered for and served a year-long tour of duty in Vietnam. After his service Studi got involved in Native American activism, and he began acting while enrolled at Tulsa Community College.

Wes Studi appeared in his first film, The Trial of Standing Bear, in 1988. Since then he has starred in more than 50 feature films and television programs, including breakout roles in 1990’s Dances with Wolves and 1992’s The Last of the Mohicans. More recently Studi was featured as Chief Cochise in the 2014 Seth MacFarlane comedy A Million Ways to Die in the West, and had a recurring part on the critically acclaimed FX series Reservation Dogs. In 2019, Wes Studi became the first Native American in history to be honored with an Academy Award.

Visit the beautiful and historic Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Pawhuska – also known as the Cathedral of the Osage – to see the shrine of the first Native American ever canonized as a saint. Born in 1656 to a Mohawk warrior and a Catholic Algonquin woman, Kateri Tekakwitha spent several years of her brief life caring for the injured and sick in a Christian community in Canada. She was declared Blessed Kateri by Pope John Paul II in 1980, and was canonized in 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI. An outdoor wooden chapel housing her shrine sits near the 8-foot bronze statue of her on the church grounds. You can find the address and more info at https://bit.ly/GCOsageCathedral

If you've got visitors in town for the holidays, bring them to Hominy in Osage County to see the New Territory sculptures. Created by local artist Cha' Tullis, these 18-20 foot tall sculptures depicting Native Americans on horseback sit on a hill overlooking the west side of town. This one-of-a-kind work of art is beautiful during the day, but truly spectacular with a gorgeous Oklahoma sunset as the backdrop! You can find more info at https://bit.ly/NewTerritoryGC

90 years ago today, a new first in human flight took place in the skies over Green Country. With support from Phillips Petroleum Company founder Frank Phillips, famous aviator Wiley Post took off from the Bartlesville airstrip on December 7, 1934 for a test flight into the stratosphere, becoming the first human to ever reach an altitude of more than 50,000 feet.

To achieve this feat, he worked with engineers from the B.F. Goodrich Company to design the world's first pressurized flight suit. Made from rubberized parachute fabric, pigskin, and an aluminum deep-sea diver's helmet, the suit served as a prototype and proof of concept for modern astronaut spacesuits. During his record-setting flight, Post also discovered the jet stream, spurring advancements in aviation and meteorology which echo down to the present.

Present-day visitors to Woolaroc Museum & Wildlife Preserve in Bartlesville will find several artifacts related to Wiley Post's life and achievements. These include historic photos from the preparation for this unprecedented flight, as well as a replica of the helmet from his pressurized suit (the original is preserved in the Smithsonian's National Air & Space Museum). You can find more info on Woolaroc and plan your own visit to see this one-of-a-kind collection at https://bit.ly/WoolarocMuseumGC

On what would have been his 86th birthday, today we're celebrating the legacy of Oklahoma music legend JJ Cale. Born in Oklahoma City on December 5, 1938 and raised in Tulsa, Cale became one of the pioneers of the style known as the Tulsa Sound. Over the course of his 50-year career, Cale wrote a string of hits made famous by more popular artists, including "After Midnight" (recorded by Eric Clapton) and "Call Me the Breeze" (recorded by Lynryd Skynyrd).

Although he never achieved mainstream success himself, Cale's one-of-a-kind blend of blues, country, and rockabilly was acknowledged as hugely influential by many of the leading musicians of the 70s and 80s, including Clapton, Neil Young, Mark Knopfler, and Waylon Jennings. You can trace J.J. Cale's legacy across several historic locations in Green Country, including Cain's Ballroom and The Church Studio in Tulsa.
