Last call to join The Clothesline exhibit!
Calling all farmers, beekeepers, maple tappers, and other agriculturalists:
You are invited to take part in a new exhibit opening this summer, The Clothesline: Food, Fiber, Air, and Soil. The installation by artist Brenda Baker highlights the hard work done in our community by people who work in agriculture. Hundreds of pieces of used work attire donated by agricultural workers act as stand-ins for the unseen people whose labor produces the food we eat. Donations of used work attire are being accepted for another week.

Meet the third North American river otter that calls The Wild Center home- Tawi:ne (pronounced Da wee neh). He was born approximately in 2017, making him 7 years old and came to The Wild Center in 2019 with Rohsno:re. After repeatedly raiding crayfish farms, the otters were live-trapped by the farmers instead of being killed. They were transferred to a holding facility in Ohio before coming to us. Tawi:ne was named in the Mohawk language and translates to “otter”. Watch Tawi:ne swim and play in the Otter Falls viewing area of The Wild Center.

Happy World Otter Day! 🦦 We'd like to highlight the North American river otters that call The Wild Center home.
Meet Scarlett - Scarlett was born in approximately 2016, making her eight years old, and came to The Wild Center later in the year. She was found separated from her mother in South Carolina. She had lacerations on her face that required medical attention and was unable to learn natural otter behaviors during her recovery. Watch Scarlett swim and play in the Otter Falls viewing area of The Wild Center.

Did you know The Wild Center produces maple syrup right on-site? Watch as we take you on a journey through the process. First, a sugar maple tree is tapped and sap is collected. The sap is then boiled in evaporators and monitored and tested until it reaches the desired sugar content. It takes about 40 gallons of sap to make one gallon of maple syrup, given that sap is about 98% water. Local community members actively participate in our maple program, contributing sap they've tapped themselves to be boiled in the Sugar Shack at The Wild Center. 🍁 Sample the syrup tomorrow, March 16, during our Maple Pancake Brunch from 10am to 12pm! Visitors are invited to the Waterside Cafe to purchase a hearty pancake breakfast and enjoy a mimosa (non-alcoholic options available). Also during the event, staff artists will pour, flip, and create edible pancake art right in front of your eyes (one per visitor included in your admission!). It's National Maple Syrup Day! In the early 1900’s, Tupper Lake was a major producer of maple syrup. The Wild Center is now a producer and works with the community to make a delicious, natural product each spring through the Community Maple Program. The tradition of maple syrup making spreads throughout many local families. Hear from Addison Bickford, a local maple syrup producer.
