National Native American Heritage Month is celebrated in November! To honor the history of our area's original inhabitants, we bring you a story of Chief Tuskaloosa.

Chief Tuskaloosa was a great Native American leader, impressive for his size and nobility. The name Tuskaloosa means “Black Warrior” in the western Muskogean language, hence the naming of Black Warrior River.

Tuskaloosa's province consisted of a series of villages, located mostly along the Coosa and Alabama rivers. Each village had its own chief, who was a vassal to Tuskaloosa, the paramount chief.

He is most famously known for his confrontation with Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto in 1540’s Battle of Mabila.

Tuscaloosa, Alabama was incorporated Dec. 13, 1819, one day before the U.S. Congress admitted Alabama as a state. It's named after the chief, honoring his legacy.

Take a walk along the Black Warrior River at the Riverwalk to explore Tuscaloosa's history.

Haunted Tuscaloosa: The Drish House ‼️

Historic Drish House stands as one of Alabama’s most notorious haunted landmarks, wrapped in chilling tales of restless spirits and eerie occurrences.

Dr. John Drish, known for his tumultuous life, met a tragic end when he fell to his death in 1867. His wife, Sarah, was obsessed with giving him a grand funeral, and she made meticulous plans for her own.

According to legend, Sarah requested that candles used at Dr. Drish’s funeral be saved for her own. But after her death in 1884, the candles were nowhere to be found.

Some have seen fiery lights illuminating the third-story tower, flickering in the night. This eerie glow is thought to be Sarah’s spirit, searching for the missing funeral candles.

The Drish House is a popular stop for ghost hunters and thrill-seekers, who are drawn to its haunted reputation.

Would you dare to visit this haunted piece of Tuscaloosa’s history?

Haunted Tuscaloosa: Evergreen Cemetery‼️

The Evergreen Cemetery sits in the shadows of Bryant-Denny Stadium, predating college football in Tuscaloosa with tombstones dating back to early to mid-1800s. 🌙☠️

Ironically, the most interesting headstone belongs to an undertaker, Rufus Strickland (1921-1992) who bought the burial plot closest to the stadium. It's rumored that he switched sides with his wife, so that he would be closer to the field.

His epitaph reads, “Hi, Thanks for stopping by."

The next time you're near the stadium, walk across the street and spot his grave on the Northeast corner (near intersection of Bryant Drive & 10th Ave). He'll surely be glad you stopped by! 🏈

Haunted Tuscaloosa: Battle-Friedman ‼️

👻 Only friendly ghosts "haunt" The Battle-Friedman House and Gardens, including a sweet canine!

🐶 An affectionate pet collie is said to roam the home. Those who stayed overnight reported feeling the dog in bed with them, along with a general sense of comfort.

👣 Others have seen unexplained human footprints in the bathroom and in dust beneath a chair️. Could they be from Alfred Battle and his wife Millicent Beale, who lived there from 1835-1875?

There's also the unresolved mystery of furniture being rearranged during the night, and the smell of floral perfume wafting through the house.

💕 Overall, visitors to this historic home feel a sense of welcome & protection from beyond the grave.

You can tour this beautiful home year-round from Tuesday-Saturday at 2:30pm!
