It’s hard to get back to sleep when howling coyotes woke me up at 3:30. A barn camera check shows my two llamas resting in the barn while the sheep are out by their feeders!

“How ewe doin’?” says Frank, our new Border Leicester ram. He came a long way, from Hands & Hearts Farm in Vermont. We’re excited to see his lambs next spring.

Claire, has liked Fred since he was a tiny bottle lamb. Now he’s a companion sheep, having traveled 4200 miles in 10 days to keep the new ram lamb company on the way back from the east.

Ewes and lambs are out on the hillside for a short introduction to grass. Lambs are learning about electric fencing, eating grass, finding mom in the big world, and the joy of running in a bigger space.

We had some fun visitors who came to see the lambs, but much preferred Llullu Tina, the llama!

We’re lambing!! The top picture shows a super mama who lambed at 5 degrees. Babies got toweled off, dried with a hair dryer and put in double coats. Colostrum in tummies, they are frisking around. The big boy ( second photo) was helped out and his twin sister arrived later. 24 degrees seemed almost warm and they’re fine as well.

The lambs and llama finally got a turn on the ironwood saplings we cut down yesterday. The ewes were eating all night, but still some left. The ironwood was so thick, there wasn’t a blade of grass under it.

The girls are fat and sassy, complaining about snow and cold. They are out of the wind and go in the barn at night. Lambing starts mid April and hopefully spring will be back by then.

Winter is a quieter time for us in the farm. I spend a lot of time skirting and selling my fleece. Today I sold Andrew’s fleece, one of my Wensleydales. It was so beautiful , I was tempted to keep it myself .
