As we continue to recover from Hurricane Helene, we are slowly regaining access to electricity, water, and internet here in the village. Village Hall now has Wi-Fi, and we are offering water, food, and personal care items to those in need. Our officers have been working tirelessly, checking on residents and delivering essential supplies. Community members are also looking out for one another, and we are grateful for the incredible sense of support during this challenging time.

While the situation remains challenging, please know that this is temporary. Our village and community are strong, and we will rebuild. As we work through the recovery process, we ask for your patience and understanding. Stay informed by following official updates from our local authorities and emergency management teams.

Fall Leave Colors are Around the Corner 🍁

Over a decade ago Michael Denslow and I created a fall color map showing when peak colors would occur in the western part of North Carolina (covering the mountains and foothills and a portion of the Piedmont). This map accounted for both elevation effects (earlier the higher up you are) and latitude (the farther north you are the earlier).

By using both latitude and elevation (which many other maps do not do), we believe we have a more accurate representation of peak fall color times. Of course, times can change due to weather, so these are approximate dates. Note that I also changed the dates to a week or so range instead of putting up a single day, which better reflects not only when the colors will be at peak, but a crude guess for how long also.

By including latitude and elevation we can explain why Highlands, which is almost two degrees farther south than Boone has peak fall colors at nearly the same time. This is because Highlands is almost 1,000' higher in elevation than Boone, and being higher is, weatherwise, like being farther north.

The reason I am posting this new map is that due to climate change, the old dates appear now to be out of sync with when colors actually do peak. In response to that, I have changed the dates on the map to better coincide with what I am actually seeing in the field. That map is attached here for your perusal.

For media people, you are free to use this map in your broadcasts as long as you credit Michael Denslow and myself as the creators.

Enjoy!

Oh what a beautiful morning! After days of rain and clouds, this morning's views were a welcome sight from the top of Grandfather Mountain. Heller's Blazing Star and Blue Ridge Goldenrod, both globally imperiled plant species, can be spotted in this photo....a good reminder to enjoy the mountain's flowers but never pick them!
