At the summit, we were rewarded with sweeping views over the mountain layers. But when the aurora lit up the sky, its colors and pillars danced above the peaks, casting a surreal glow. The renaming to Kuwohi, in honor of the Cherokee heritage, adds a deeper sense of connection to the mountain’s natural and cultural significance, especially under an Aurora-lit sky.”

Our hearts and prayers go out to the residents of Western North Carolina who have been impacted by the devastating effects of Helene. The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad has been working tirelessly to restore a sense of normalcy during this challenging time.

We are pleased to announce that passenger rail operations from Bryson City to the Nantahala Gorge will resume on Monday, September 30. Reservations are now available.

The Smoky Mountain Elk Rut is on!

October is one of our favorite times of the year to hike. The leaves are changing to vibrant colors and you can enjoy the sounds of leaves crunching under your feet and “Bugle” echoes in the forests as Bull Elks seek mates.

Known as the Rut, this annual Elk mating ritual, which occurs from mid-September through late October, can be enjoyed by visitors on a daily basis. You just have to know where and when to look, and make sure to keep your distance from the 600-700 lb bulls.

The photos we took during today's hike were from the Oconaluftee River Trail. This time of year, you will often find the elk in the fields next to the visitor center (early mornings and late afternoons), and then along the river during the day.

We are big fans of the Deep Creek Waterfall Loop in the Great Smoky Mountains National Forest. Generally considered an easy route, this pretty hike takes you past Tom Branch Falls, Indian Creek Falls, and Juney Whank Falls (pictured).
