Vernal Falls in Yosemite National Park 🏞️

The name “Vernal” means “spring,” symbolizing renewal and the season when the waterfall is at its most powerful.
Thanks to the snowmelt, Vernal Fall roars to life in the spring, creating intense mist that drenches hikers on the Mist Trail—one of the most popular and wettest hikes in the park!

Bonus fun: The mist is so thick in peak season that hikers call it the “natural shower” of Yosemite. Some people even bring ponchos just for that stretch!

When visiting Yosemite National Park, it’s easy to focus on the grand: towering granite domes, sweeping meadows, cascading waterfalls, and trees that stretch up stories high into the sky. Often, we find ourselves looking up so much that we forget to look down.

The floor of Yosemite Valley tells its own tale of grandeur in a much smaller way. Granite rocks left over from ancient rockfalls, mice nests woven from meadow grasses, the journey of a single water droplet to the ocean, and the seed of a tree just beginning to take root. This little ponderosa sapling will brave years of frosts, floods, competition for sunlight, and the hustle of passing hiker’s boots. If it endures, it will one day be large enough to unfurl its branches and join the canopies overhead as a fully-fledged pine tree.

Observing small details helps deepen our connection to the natural world. By noticing these tiny wonders, we better understand the environment’s complexities and learn to be more mindful of where we step.

HOLIDAY WEEKEND WATER SAFETY

☀️ Madera County has a bounty of beautiful outdoor recreation areas, and though temperatures are warm, we urge everyone to use extreme caution around ALL waterways and creeks- rocks are slippery, the water is moving deceptively fast, and temperatures can be deadly cold.

⚠️ With locations such as Angel Falls that are close to parking lots and trails, hikers often have a false sense of security about the level of danger that exists. When hiking around the water, extra caution needs to be taken. Rocks can be extremely slippery even when they aren’t wet. One missed step can result in a serious injury or fatality.

💦 The water is extremely swift, and deadly cold. Warm air temperatures do not mean warm water temperatures. Cold water can very quickly remove heat from the body and lead to a loss of movement in the limbs. When heading into rivers and streams, always take precautions such as wearing a life vest, closely supervising children, bringing a life preserver with you, and following all river/stream closures.
