The Rougarou, also known as the loup-garou, is essentially Louisiana's bayou-dwelling werewolf, and is a prominent figure in Cajun folklore. It is most often described as having a human body with the head of a wolf or dog, with glowing red eyes and razor sharp teeth. Variations also associate it with animals such as pigs, cows, and chickens, due to the fact that wolves are not often seen in the area.
The Rougarou is often also associated with the Skunk Ape or the Honey Island Swamp Monster, likely due to another variation of the myth which states the creature is a shapeshifter that can change forms between human and animal at will, sometimes making it seem more like a swamp Sasquatch than a werewolf.
Local stories say the Rougarou roams the streets at night, antagonizing people to attack it. When the first drop of blood is drawn, they return to human form and tell the attacker who they really are. If this witness tells anyone about this encounter within a year and a day, they will become a Rougarou themselves. Other variations say a Rougarou can turn their victims merely by making eye contact.
The Rougarou has a varied history, though all variations seem to trace it back to the French. Some sources claim the myth originated in medieval France, when belief in werewolves would have been far more prevalent. A version from the 16th century paints it as being seen as something similar to a genetic disorder, rather than the curse most other versions of the myth portray the Rougarou as being. In this version, the Rougarou would live life as a normal person until some event occurred that triggered their condition. Their body would then undergo a transformation and they would develop a craving for meat. Their full transformation into their Rougarou form would be completed once they had their first bite of human flesh.
The story of the Rougarou supposedly changed once French immigrants—or possibly also French Canadian immigrants—came to live in the area which is now Louisiana. Across French Louisiana, it is a very common legend, and most Louisiana natives are very familiar with at least the name, if nothing else.
The Rougarou is also thought to be nothing more than a bogeyman story to scare children or Catholics into obedience. Children are told by their elders to behave or else the Rougarou will get them. Catholics are told it will hunt down and kill them if they don't obey Lent. And speaking of scaring Catholics, one French Catholic myth claims that in order for someone to turn into a Rougarou, they must break Lent seven years in a row. But as someone who lives in Louisiana and knows many Catholics who break Lent, I'm not so sure about this myth's validity.
There also exists more supernatural explanations for the origins of the Rougarou. Some versions of the myth involve witchcraft, wherein a witch has the ability to curse someone to be a Rougarou. The unfortunate person is under the spell for 101 days. The curse is transferred when it draws another human's blood.
There is also a Native American story of the "Rugaru." This version varies from being a Bigfoot legend to resembling something more like a wendigo. There has been some dispute about whether or not this myth is actually related to the French Louisiana Rougarou legend.
Despite the Rougarou legend seemingly beginning as a way to scare Catholics and children, many locals maintain its existence and have their own personal stories, especially among the older generation. A story in The Daily Comet titled "Tales of The Rougarou Still Haunt Local Memories" states that, "In the past, rumors about strange or eccentric neighbors would float through small bayou communities, labeling various people as the dreaded rougarou." This suggests an explanation for the abundance of stories from locals about seeing a Rougarou for themselves.
A story in The Nicholls Worth, a local college paper, titled "Rougarou Remains Strong Figure in Cajun Folklore," recounts a story from a woman about an experience in her youth. She says a local boy was being followed by a dog when he decided to cut it with his pocketknife. The boy saw the dog turn into a man, then ran home to tell his family. According to the woman, "The next day a prominent physician appeared in town with his right arm cut and in a sling. I remember when the physician shot himself here in Lockport. A year later the boy killed himself and left a letter that the family turned over to the sheriff. Even today he refuses to let anyone see it."
The Rougarou has also been tied to the story of the Deridder Roadkill. A woman named Barbara Mullins discovered a supposedly unidentifiable carcass on the side of the road in 1996.
Some have claimed it to be the body of a Rougarou, though others have speculated it might be a Chupacabra or Devil Monkey. However, many people also believe it's just a dog.

Come discover the vampires and ghosts of mysterious Transylvania in one of the world's most romantic settings complete with medieval castles, ancient cities, creepy monasteries with cemeteries, world class cuisine, and rich, colorful traditions. On this 10-day tour, you will get to not only visit 15 ancient and medieval castles in Transylvania but also stay in one of the haunted castles. The Hotel Medieval in Alba Iulia is an old, haunted castle with an amazing but tumultuous history converted into a 5-star hotel, with all the modern luxuries one can imagine. The other hotel where our guests stay is the more modern Hotel Aurelius. This 5-star hotel is perched in the high Carpathians above the cosmopolitan but remote city of Brasov. It is surrounded by lush alpine meadows, majestic fir forests and a beautiful lake. It is equipped with a spa, whirlpool bath tubs, a sauna, an indoor swimming pool, a fitness room, and so much more!

The tour includes a visit to the famous Bran Castle; the source of inspiration for Bram Stoker's famous vampire novel "Dracula." The actual Dracula - Vlad the Impaler was a resident of this castle in the 1400s. He was one of its most infamous prisoners where he was tortured gruesomely. Bran Castle is not only creepy, but said to be haunted by Dracula's spirit. The local legends about vampires in the area - even nowadays - abound.

Our guests also visit Poenari Castle, the REAL Dracula Castle that he not only built, but actually resided during his reign. The setting is perfect - perched on top of a steep cliff, and often surrounded by clouds and mist, overlooking breathtaking mountains and deep green valleys. This is quite a treat - because it's so off the beaten path. HAUNTED HISTORY TOURS will take you to this hidden gem that most other tourists miss entirely.

Haunted History Tours will also take you to the rugged and serenely beautiful Corvin Castle - one of the most massive medieval castles in the entire world. You will get a grand view of how medieval life really used to be. It's haunted much like most Transylvanian castles because of the centuries of torture that took place within its confines.

Guests will also visit an underground salt mine that was discovered around 1,000 years ago - now turned into a fun but creepy theme park. The galleries in the spooky salt mine are said to be not only haunted, but many of them are hideaways for vampires - it IS an underground mine, after all.

In the summertime and fall (not in the spring), our guests will also ride on the famous Transfagarasan road. This magnificent roadway is described by the popular BBC Top Gear automotive show as "the most beautiful road in the world." You will view waterfalls, breathtaking meadows of colorful wildflowers, deep, dark forests, and craggy, vertical cliffs with wild mountain goats grazing on them.

The medieval town of Sighisoara is Dracula's childhood hometown and a gem in itself. Guests will visit the actual house (and his bedroom) where he was born and raised. The entire town is a beautiful, intricate labyrinth of colorful houses adorned with flowers and flanked narrow cobblestone streets. Above the town, sits an ancient Saxon cemetery from the 1500s. It is reputed as very haunted by many of the tormented souls buried within.

Cartisoara Abbey is yet another highlight on the Haunted History Tours adventure in Transylvania - a Trappist abbey built by French monks about 900 years ago. Today, it is half in ruins which only adds to the mystique. It has a cemetery within the medieval walls. Inside one of the surviving chapels are creepy, unexplainable, illogical paintings of vampires biting local women. This is another off-the-beaten-path treat on our tour. Rarely do other tourists ever make it to this location.

We will also take you to the infamous Hoia Baciu forest where numerous witnesses report having seen UFOs, aliens, ghosts, vampires, and where trees grow up in strange S-shaped patterns. Truly creepy!

Guests will visit a mysterious mountain believed to be an energy portal with curative medicinal powers, and purported by many to be a portal to another dimension, and also serving as a time portal. Come over and find out! These are just some of the highlights and locations of the tour. Our guests visit many more locations.

Included in the tour are breakfasts and dinners every day that we are in Transylvania, in carefully-selected, top-rated restaurants - offering an array of traditional Tranyslvanian cuisine, but also modern international cuisine.

As a lagniappe (that's a Cajun French term; it means "a little extra"), to start off your big adventure, all guests will meet up as a group in New Orleans, and you'll get to go on a two-hour Ghosts and Legends of New Orleans tour; as well as a two-hour Vampire tour, where you will learn about unexpected, creepy connections linking Louisiana to Transylvania.

As a group, we will fly directly from New Orleans to London, and after a brief layover, we'll have a short flight to our destination in Transylvania. At the end of the tour, we fly all our guests back to New York (not New Orleans, on the way back). The airfares ARE INCLUDED in the price of the tour. Prices start at $3995 PP.

Come over to romantic, mysterious, creepy, haunted, vampiric Transylvania, for the WOW experience of your lifetime.
