Times have been tough and I want everyone to see the benefits Nature can give us. About me:
I am a nature educator with the city of Hillsboro going on 7 years now and have a total of 23 years naturalist experience. I have a B.S. degree in Zoology from TESC with a focus on Ornithology (study of birds) and was lucky enough to work on some research projects in some pretty cool areas before moving t
o Portland. I am also an amateur Wildlife Photographer, check out my photos of those cool places along with weekly nature facts on here and Instagram .
Wildfire season has been in full swing for months now and in North America we have already seen 7 million acres+ burn and August doesn't start till tomorrow.
As our summers get hotter and hotter each year it's is CRUCIAL you follow all fire regulations and nature etiquette while out in nature. She's relying on you now just as much as we rely on her!
Free Wildlife Walk this Sunday 4/7 @ 10am! We'll meet at the bluff trailhead in Sellwood Park. We'll learn about how our winters are changing and what we can expect in the future.
Just finished this insect hotel last week. Adding to the other 12 bug houses I have in the front and side gardens. I used all recycled materials except for a few screws and I think it came out great.
All the spaces, materials and holes will make great nesting areas, hunting grounds, and provide shelter during severe weather. Making even small insect shelters at your outdoor space can have a huge impact for your local bug population and help keep our pollinators safe.
Fun fact: Rough-skinned Newts (Taricha granulosa) are one of the most poisonous animals on the planet. They carry a neurotoxin that is potent enough to kill over 15 people!
They don't bite but will release the toxin through their skin when threatened. It's important to leave these Amphibians be and observe with our eyes, not our hands.
These animals casually walk around because they only have one natural predator, the garter snake. Only garter snake species in the Pacific Northwest have a special anti-venom that allows them the eat the newt safely. This creates an evolutionary arms race between the two species making the newt a little more toxic each generation... So cool.

Winter Wonder Wildlife Walks begin Sunday February 4th!
A 3 part Free Guided Nature Walk Series in Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge each First Sunday of February, March, and April.
10am to 12pm - Free, Family Friendly, Rain or shine, about a 2 mile loop.

We'll meet as usual at the bluff trailhead in Sellwood Park by the baseball field and parking lot. Walk will be about 2 hours but in that time we should see PLENTY of wildlife tonight, hope to see you there!

Same place in Sellwood Park, come join me for some spectacular nature viewing right here in the city! Right now is the perfect time to see some beautiful flowers and some amazing migratory birds. Walks are always free but donations are accepted, never required though!

We had a great walk yesterday! We saw so much stuff from a Chickadee and Bushtit nest, to Eagles, hawks, deer and Hummingbirds!
