Comet A3
-
The moon was bright behind this scene, and some of the neighbor's porch lights were shining bright, but between 8:00 and 9:00 p.m. last night this was the scene.
-
Comet A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) – is barely visible with the naked eye, but binoculars, a spotting scope, or a long lens on your tripod mounted camera helps to successfully view this comet. Comet A3 dipped below the horizon last night around 9:00 p.m.
-
Warm weather, even in northern Utah, made it comfortable to spend some time observing this comet, which was helpful for a cameraman with a cold. Chilly weather is coming to Utah tomorrow, so tonight may be the last comfortable temps for viewing, if the skies are clear.
-
This comet will still be visible for the next week or two, before it jettisons itself out beyond our solar system, and won't return again, at least in our lifetime. This is said to be the brightest comet to pass by earth in the past 27 years, since Comet Hale-Bopp.

Yesterday On The Mountain - Mt. Nebo
-
We traveled via side-by-side UTV from Interstate 15 near Santaquin, Utah and headed over the Mount Nebo mountain range to the east side and connected to the paved Nebo Loop road.
-
Fall colors were in full array in several places, although the warmer weather this fall seemed to have some effect on the color change as leaves were sometimes simply turning brown rather than to vibrant colors.

We spotted mountain goats high up on Mt. Nebo, deer, a sage hen, and various other small wildlife. It was mountain roundup time for the cattle owner of the area and we enjoyed watching a small bunch of cowboys, young and old, pushing some cattle to a trailer.

Ponds reflected the fall colors beautifully, open meadows with their tall grasses swayed and the aspen leaves fluttered in the afternoon breezes.

Thanks to Rick Mason for the guided ride, and great conversation and company.

Breakfast of Champions
-
This morning in central Utah.
Suggestion: You may not want to zoom in if you get queasy with nature's circle-of-life.
-
With two years of good rain, healthy foliage, and abundant food sources, the rodent population and the bird-of-prey population seem to have expanded significantly this year.
-
It's tough to get close to a view like this, but this red-tailed hawk was more concerned about dining, than worrying about a quiet observer with a camera.

Antelope Island, Great Salt Lake - Utah
-
From late afternoon to dusk, and into the night, we captured the wildlife and distant scenes of Utah's Antelope Island. Our final effort was to observe the Milky Way rising over this Buffalo Point on the island, and over the southwest edge of the Great Salt Lake.
-
The scenes were captured last week, and now is the time to enjoy roaming around on Antelope Island while the fall weather is so comfortable.

World's Largest Living Organism - Located In Utah.
-
Fall Colors have just hit the higher mountains and this video, taken just a few days ago, shows Pando which is the name given an Aspen tree in Utah that has 4,700 stems and weighs an estimated 13 million pounds. Researches have performed genetic testing to identify the stems are all from the same origin. What looks like a forest patch of individual trees is actually just one tree that is connected via a complex root system.
-
Pando is visible from the paved Utah road SR25 that leads into Fish Lake and is close to Loa, Utah where you'll find lodging, dining, and groceries as you visit this area. Leaves are changing all across the Boulder Mountain and Thousand Lakes mountain areas of Capitol Reef Country. Time to get outside and enjoy the colors of fall.

Zion National Park Stargazing - Utah
-
Milky Way viewing over Utah's Zion National Park is best between the months of March and October.
-
The eastern plateau above Zion National Park is the best place to view the stars in the night-sky simply because it is further away from the city lights of distant cities such as Kanab, Springdale, Hurricane, and St. George, Utah.

Dark Sky - Too Many Stars To Count
-
Capitol Reef Country
-
It was nearing dusk as we rambled our way over backroads to the edge of a non-crossable wash. The last rays-of-day fought their way through some dark slow-moving clouds as we exited our vehicles and descended a steep embankment that led to the bottom of the freshly flooded arroyo. A sweet flower fragrance wafted through the twisting shallow slot as we wound our way to our intended destination, a buttressed wall of variegated red sandstone.
-
We had come here to shoot midnight photos of the milky way as we knew the moon was in its darkest and least visible phase. After scouting the terrain for spots from which to capture the stars, we returned to our trucks and set up camp, rehydrating some tasty stroganoff for our dining pleasure.
-
With our cameras, tripods, and headlamps we traipsed back to our scouted terrain to begin our night-sky capturing session. To our chagrin the slow-moving clouds were still sliding by like cold molasses.
-
We waited.
-
Around 11:00 p.m. the Milky Way began to peek out from behind the last edges of the departing v***r, and starlight brought some scant illumination to the ridgeline that loomed before us.
-
The universe opened to our gaze as we methodically tweaked our camera settings and compositions, while infrequently moving to new locations. The night breezes dwindled away and it seemed, for a while, that we had access to all time and space.
-
Reluctantly we traded our star-filled location for our beds back at camp, dozing into a slumber, easing into a dream of how these scenes would ultimately appear when later viewed on our computer screens.

This is just one of the shots we acquired, as we contemplated the impossible task of attempting to count each of the stars in this firmament.

We recently enjoyed watching the beautiful egrets in their natural habitat. These graceful birds, related to herons, have long legs, necks, and bills. Their necks have an 'S' shape because of an extra-long neck bone, which lets them bend their necks up and down but not sideways.
-
How do egrets build their nests? Egrets build their nests using sticks and twigs, often in trees or shrubs near water. They may nest in colonies with other wading birds.
-
Have you ever seen an egret in the wild?

Bear Lake is truly a sight to behold, with its crystal-clear waters perfectly reflecting the expansive blue skies and the towering mountains of Utah. We couldn't resist stopping to fully immerse ourselves in the serene beauty of the landscape. Every glance offered a new stunning view, reminding us just how enchanting nature can be.
-
What makes Bear Lake so blue? Bear Lake's vivid blue color is primarily due to the refraction of light off the limestone deposits suspended in its waters. These minerals scatter the blue wavelengths of light, giving the lake its strikingly blue appearance.

At the break of dawn, we set off towards the expansive fields and marshes. As the early light filtered through, we moved cautiously, weaving under trees and treading lightly over the muddy terrain. It was the perfect time to observe owls, and we were rewarded with the sight of several barn owls gliding silently above us, occasionally glancing our way.
-
As daylight strengthened, we continued our search for large birds, but were unexpectedly greeted by mule deer leaping from their hiding places.
-
The sun rose over Mt. Nebo, accompanied by the resonant calls of sandhill cranes nearby. We navigated through additional marshes, using large trees as cover to approach close enough for photos before the majestic birds departed.
-
On our return, we observed hawks perched in trees and geese forming a V-shape in the sky. A buck with soft antlers leaped over a fence, eluding our cameras. Near a stream, we discovered a young Swainson's Hawk nestled in tall grass, seemingly too young to fly. We watched it eventually ascend to lower branches, relieving our concerns about its ability to survive.
-
As the day progressed, we spotted it again, this time with its family, soaring a bit higher and with greater assurance. Witnessing its integration and growing confidence was truly heartwarming.

Curious about those big Sandhill Cranes? They're pretty awesome. Tall, with long necks and wings that spread wide, they're a sight to behold in nature. Their feathers are mostly gray, but there's a bit of rusty color mixed in, which makes them even cooler. And get this - adult cranes have pale cheeks and red crowns, while the younger ones have a more muted look. Nature's art, right?
