Two bedrooms (one direct Gulf-front and one direct bay-front - both with king-size beds), two bathrooms. When we travel over 1,000 miles from our home in Kansas City to enjoy a beach vacation we're not interested in being steps from the beach, across from the beach, or having what is often euphemistically advertised as, a view of the beach. In our opinion, it simply makes no sense to stop 1,000 or
even 500 feet short of our destination. This is why, after over 40-years of traveling all around Florida, and an intense three-year search for what we consider to be the perfect location, we chose the one and only spot on Siesta Key where we can watch manatees cruise and dolphins jump in the crystal waters of the Gulf of Mexico that are only a stone's throw from our lanai. This is beachfront at its best! Fisherman's Cove is built on a very narrow strip of sand. The Gulf of Mexico is approximately 250 feet from our lanai, and the bay inlet is only about 100 feet from our front balcony. This gives us the best of both worlds - the beach and magnificent sunsets on one side, and boat docks framed by beautiful sunrises on the other side. We are so close to the water that some of our guests have said that sitting on the lanai is like being on the lido deck of a cruise ship, and that "the pictures simply don't do it justice." After buying our dream beach retreat, our first priority was perfecting the 120 square foot lanai. At the risk of sounding gauche, we spared no expense when we decided to rip out the old and start fresh with floor to ceiling sliding glass panels across the western view of the gulf, and a large picture window facing south. To perfect the view we replaced the "picket fence" railing you'll see on other Fisherman's Cove condos with a custom tempered glass rail so our guests wouldn't have to view the beach from behind bars. With this design you get a totally unobstructed view of the Gulf of Mexico, and you can slide the glass panels open to enjoy the gentle gulf breeze with your morning coffee. The screens slide too, which allows you to take great sunset pictures without having to leave the comfort of your front row seat. With the wide-open floor plan, you will also enjoy direct gulf views from the kitchen, dining room and living room. The master suite has a direct beachfront view of the Gulf of Mexico too, and with its 4' by 6’ sliding window, you will be lulled to sleep at night by the sound of the waves; the perfect prescription for relieving stress! At the south end of Siesta Key you escape the maddening crowds that are common on the northern end of the island. At the south end traffic moves smoothly along tree-lined streets, and with three good restaurants and two bars within a short walk, you may decide there is no reason to venture beyond our little slice of paradise. Also within a short walk is a full-service marina, a playground for kids, and secluded picnic area with a grill that is perfect for a sunset cookout. Kayak rental and tours are also within easy walking distance; as are boat rentals, Jet Ski rentals, fishing guides and other activities. The fishing is great from both our beach and the bay, and I can help improve your luck by pointing out some of my favorite spots. Snook, Sheephead, various members of the Jack family, Flounder and Cobia are common, and if you stay with us midyear, don’t be surprised if you hook into a large Tarpon. If you bring your own boat, or rent one during your stay, you are welcome to use any of the boat docks at Fisherman’s Cove free of charge. We also provide complimentary kayak storage, and have a dock that is specially designed kayak launching. Please let me know if you plan a kayak outing, and I’ll tell you about some great areas to explore in the mangrove islands that are only a very short paddle from our dock. Beyond the short walk to these activities, you'll find several golf courses within five miles and 92 total courses in the Sarasota area. There are also numerous tennis courts available and, of course, great shopping, dining and nightlife. Be sure to allocate time and budget for some of the best restaurants in the country - you'll get a list and commentary covering all our favorite restaurants in our extensive get acquainted package. Popular attractions that are within a short drive include The Ringling Brothers Museum, The Sailor Circus, Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium, The Sarasota Opera House, Marie Selby Botanical Garden and The Sarasota Classic Car Museum. In my opinion, the best GM muscle car museum in the country is only a 45 minute drive to the south. During the winter and early spring, you can see the Baltimore Orioles play at the renovated Ed Smith stadium. During baseball season you can drive a bit more than an hour to the north to see the Tampa Bay Rays. In addition to these activities, we provide our guests with a comprehensive “get acquainted” package that includes a listing of our favorite restaurants (includes address, phone and web addresses, and in many cases, our critique of the menu). I think you'll be amazed by the number of truly fine restaurants in the Siesta Key and surrounding Sarasota area. Our get acquainted package also includes a listing of fun things to do that aren’t covered in the tourist brochures. For example, did you know there is a nearby beach where you can readily find fossilized shark teeth that are five to fifteen million years old? Well, there is, but it’s not the one you’ll read about in the travel books and brochures. While we enjoy the sporting activities, sightseeing and night life, our favorite ritual is decidedly more laid back. For us, it's all about the view, the sound of the waves and the open and un-crowded beaches that stretch for miles to both the north and south of the condo. The beach in front of our condo was "re-nourished" with fresh sand from the gulf during the spring of 2016, and is perfect for walking. In total, they widened the beach by about 150' for over a two mile stretch. The first aerial picture looking west is representative of the way the beach looks today. To our north you can walk for approximately a mile and a half before you come to the famed “Point of Rocks.” When you walk the beach to the south you'll pass by one small condo, about six private residences, and following that, you'll enjoy more than a mile of totally undeveloped beachfront. This is one of the few undeveloped areas you'll find on any of any of Florida’s Gulf barrier islands - it's just you, the birds and some fresh seashells that washed up during the night. As you walk further south you'll come across the very exclusive North Casey's Key community. Here mansions boarder the water and you get to walk the beach of the rich and famous. The first house you'll come to is owned by world-famous author Stephen King. If you’re up to it, you can continue south for a total of 13 miles before reaching the southern tip of Casey’s Key. Along the way you’ll walk past houses owned by people like Oprah and Michael Jordon. Back at the condo you'll love the third floor direct view of the gulf and the sound of the waves as you drift off to sleep in a master suite that overlooks the gulf with a 4' by 6' sliding window. Your guests using the large east bedroom will get to enjoy a wonderful sunrise over the bay from their bedroom in the morning. The condo floor plan is spacious with large bedrooms that easily accommodate the king-size beds you’ll find in both the master suite and guest bedroom. You'll find both beds, and even the mattress in the pull out sofa to be extremely comfortable. In the master suite we recently bought a new Jamison pillow top mattress that is a notch up from the highly acclaimed mattress they sell to Marriott. Both bedrooms have plenty of closest space, and there are two freshly updated full bathrooms – one with a large tiled shower in the master suite, and the other with a tub and shower. You may also enjoy the well-equipped kitchen with full-size appliances. For your convenience, your reserved parking space is straight across from the entrance where you will find an elevator and carts you can use to move things between your vehicle and your room. Please note: There are NO hidden charges for maid service, cleaning or fresh linens. We also provide free wireless Internet access (WiFi), and if you bring your boat, or rent one while you're here, you have free use of our boat docks. If there should ever be a problem, we have full-time office and maintenance workers onsite, and phone numbers you can call for 24/7 support! This is your time to relax, and we do everything we can to insure the only surprises are good surprises. Whether you are planning a romantic getaway or a family vacation, Fisherman's Cove is a great destination. If you are our guest for even just one week, you'll understand why they say, "if you're lucky enough to live on Siesta Key, you're lucky enough!"

Our hearts go out to everyone impacted by Hurricane Idalia and we want to thank you for your many emails and texts to support us. We are posting to let you know that thankfully our condos in Fishermans Cove are fine and did not have any damage and Turtle Beach looks great, likely due to the recent sand renourishment. We did not lose electricity which was amazing and our guests were able to return today. Thank you again to all our current, past and future guests. Our condos are directly on the beach and have unobstructed oceanfront views (Gulf Front). When we travel we are not interested in being steps from the beach or having a "view of the beach", we want to be smack dab right on the beach and have a direct unobstructed view of the Gulf Of Mexico. That is what you get in our condos! With wide open floor plans, you will enjoy direct Gulf views from the living room, dining room, kitchen and master bedroom. This is beachfront at its best!

Average weather conditions and water temperature by month for Siesta Key, FL
Our power has been restored and the grounds have been cleaned. The manager has personally inspected our condo and we are ready to welcome our guests that will arrive this afternoon.
We still have three available weeks in early December 2017. The first two are at our low-season rate of only $1,150.00. December is a great month to visit Siesta Key.
In December the air temperature has cooled enough to where you can leave the window open to enjoy the nice Gulf breeze and the sound of the waves at night lulling you to sleep. December is also one of the driest months of the year, so it seldom rains.

It appears that Fisherman's Cove (our condo) was spared! I'm told there is quite a bit of cleanup and that we don't have electricity yet, but given the threat we faced only 24 hours ago, I'm very thankful. If you've stayed with us, you've probably met some of the wonderful people that work at Fisherman's Cove - they not only put pride in their work, they put love into doing it well. We'll be back up and running in no time.

First, a big "thank you" to the many past and future guests that have written to insure we are okay!! We were in Kansas City during the storm. I've been in contact with our manager (Rhonda) and she advised me that all the wonderful folks in the office and maintenance are okay too. We won't have any news on the condo until later today at best, but given what I saw on radar and have heard in the news, I'm optimistic. I will be in and out quite a bit today, but I will update when I learn more.

From canopy walk to gator-filled waters, this Florida park offers wildlife aplenty
Many of our guests, particularly families with kids, tell me that Myakka State park is one of their favorite attractions in the Siesta Key (Sarasota) area. Dolphins and Manatees are common sights along the beach on Siesta Key, but occasionally you'll spot some some really unusual critters. It is unlikely you'll encounter a Sea Hare by the beach like the one shown in this video, but if you do don't be alarmed. Sea Hares, and the dark purple ink they excrete to mask their escape, are harmless.
The ink is not synthesized, but extracted from the Sea Hare's primary diet of algae. This is why you'll see them more frequently around docks and in bays where algae is common and seldom spot them along the beach or in open water.
The name "Sea Hare" can be traced back more than two thousand years to ancient Rome. It is suspected the two significant protrusions on either side of its head, which are similar to, but much larger than what you see on snails, were thought to look like rabbit ears.
The Sea Hare, which is often called a Florida Inkfish and sometimes mistakenly called a Batfish, isn't a fish at all. The Sea Hare is the largest member of the Gastropod family that does not have an external shell (its soft shell is internal), and can grow to over 30 inches across.
Beyond its large size, the Sea Hare is also unique when compared to other Gastropods like Sea Snails and Sea Slugs in that it is not relegated to only crawling across the bottom of the ocean. While far from an elegant swimmer, it spreads its body to swim in a fashion somewhat similar to a Stingray with severe muscle atrophy.
Due to the fact the Sea Hare is not a strong swimmer, it can fall victim to strong tides and rough seas. The one in this video was spotted a bit out of its normal habitat by the large Sand Bar in the Big Pass channel that goes between Lido Key and Siesta Key.
If you notice a Sea Hare that is struggling or stranded at low tide, please take a minute to return it to deeper water and far enough from shore that it won't get washed up in the surf. It may secrete some purple ink, but it's harmless and the ink washes off easily from your hands.

Not only is it right on the beach and less than 200 feet from the Gulf of Mexico, it is on a VERY narrow strip of sand, which means the bay is only about 100 feet from the east balcony. Fisherman's Cove
We have only one week available for turtle hatching season this year. That is the week of August 26 to September 2, 2017. The weekly rate for up to four guests is $1,150.00 plus tax. We can accommodate up to six guests for modest charge. Please note, there are no extra charges for cleaning, linens, WiFi or anything else. As of June 24th, there are more than twice as many Loggerhead turtle nests on Siesta Key as there were last year at this time. With nearly 400 nests already established, this will be an exciting year for guests as the baby turtles begin to hatch and make their way to the Gulf of Mexico. Guests from past years often say that watching a turtle hatching was the highlight of their vacation.
Nesting season will continue into October, but we'll begin to see the baby turtles from established nests hatch the coming week and hatching activity should peak some time in August to September.
Normally Loggerhead turtles lay their eggs during the night. However, there are often stragglers that get a late start, or want to be sure the nest is well above the point where it could be washed away by storms. Such was the case last year when guests rallied to watch this exhausted Loggerhead make her way back to the water long after the sun was shining on the beach.
We hate to see our guests leave!

Even if you aren't an ornithologist, it's hard not to be captivated by the wide selection of interesting birds that call Siesta Key home. This is a male Black-crowned Night Heron.
Beyond the green parrots that you'll commonly see in the trees in front of the condo, you'll probably encounter more than a dozen different species during a beach walk. In the morning it's common to see Terns, Gulls, Pelicans and an occasional Osprey dive for fish in the Gulf as though its a breakfast buffet. The fishermen love to see the birds diving - it usually means a large fish has chased smaller bait-fish to the surface.

We currently still have one week open during turtle hatching season. There are already nearly 200 established nests on Siesta Key alone (nearly 1,500 between Long Boat Key and Venice). It's a real treat to gather on the beach and watch as the tiny turtles clumsily make their way to the Gulf.
If you stay at our condo the week of August 26 to September 2, 2017 the odds are you'll have several opportunities to experience what some of our guests have said was the highlight of their vacation. The rate for the week of August 26th for up to four guests is $1,150.00 plus tax. For a slight extra charge, we can comfortably accommodate up to six guests. If you want to kick your bird watching up a notch, take a day trip to the world famous Venice Rookery, which is only about 30 minutes to the south, where you will commonly see Great Blue Herons, Great Egrets, Anhingas, Snowy Egrets, Cattle Egrets, Glossy Ibises, Green Herons, Tricolored Herons and Black-crowned Night Herons.

Another great place for not only bird watching, but also seeing alligators is the Myakka River Park, which is about 30 minutes to the east. There are a variety of tours offered including a low-speed air boat. Or you can choose to go it on your own by renting a canoe or kayak. Many of the families that have stayed at our condo have said their kids loved spending an afternoon at the Myakka River Park.

Summer is here. No, Summer is not starting early this year, but if you stay in our condo there is a pretty good chance you'll see our resident Gopher Tortoise named Summer. :) As opposed to the green parrots that hang out in the trees, Summer is pretty quiet and spends most of her day in the shade below munching on the grass.
Our next opening is for the week of August 26 to September 2, 2017. The rate the week for up to four guests is $1,150.00 plus tax - NO extra charges for cleaning, linens, WiFi or anything else.
Following that our next opening is Thanksgiving week (November 18 to November 25, 2017). The rate for the week for up to four guests is $1,425.00 plus tax - NO extra charges for cleaning, linens, WiFi or anything else.
We also have openings in December 2017 and are now accepting reservations for April and May 2018.
We can accommodate up to six guests. The charge for more than four guests is $10 per day per guest.
