Did you know Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. established several connections to the Richmond Region during the Civil Rights Movement?

Some of his many visits to the region's key landmarks include Virginia Union University during the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the Altria Theatre, formerly the Mosque Theatre, during the 1960 Pilgrimage of Prayer rally.

While his influence was felt nationwide, Richmond became a significant battleground for the fight against segregation and discrimination. Plan ahead to spend this upcoming MLK Day as a day of service and reflect on his legacy through impactful local events and activities:

■ Jan. 19 - Celebrate MLK Richmond Symphony Performance Richmond Symphony

■ Jan. 20 - Day of Service with Rise Against Hunger Richmond at Hardywood Park Craft Brewery

■ Jan. 20 - 12th Annual MLK Community Day at Black History Museum & Cultural Center

■ Jan. 20-23 - University of Richmond MLK Celebration: Community Conversations and Service Projects University of Richmond | University of Richmond-Bonner Center for Civic Engagement
