Travel in Jamaica - Orignal Content

I have been asked the question how often and where do young adults travel for vacation. For our discussion young adults refers to Jamaicans in the age group 20 to 40 years.

From my observations over the many years of living in Jamaica I have found that young adults seek as early as possible to secure the correct documents that will allow them to travel overseas. Though the economic cost of obtaining a visa to visit top vacation destinations such as the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom is probative for the average citizen; those who successfully procure these documents travel to these countries for vacation at least once per ten years especially to the United States. This is done to ensure that the Visa remains active and is not automatically cancelled.

The top international vacation destination is the United States which is visited an average of three times per ten year period.

If the young adult is seeking to migrate to the United States then the vacation average jumps to once every three years. It is generally understood that frequent vacations to the United States will expedite the immigration process. The next top international vacation spot is Canada which is frequently visited due to the ease of obtaining a visitor’s visa. While young adult visits Canada an average of two times per ten years, Canada is by no means the favourite destination but is often used as a substitute when vacationing in the United States is not possible.

The United Kingdom having imposed visa restrictions, along with the prohibitive cost of obtaining documents and airfare is the least favourite of the International vacation countries with overall estimates of once every twelve years.
Regional vacation travel is by far the most frequent if not popular. Due to the CARICOM i.e Caribbean Single Market and economy (CSME) agreement Jamaicans are free to travel to the participating Caribbean countries using only their passports.
Top destinations in descending order include Cayman Island, Curacao, Trinidad and Tobago, and Barbados. Vacation to the Cayman Islands also last longer as most Jamaicans spend up to three months in Cayman, in what they call a working vacation. Vacationers visit the Cayman Islands once every five years. Curacao once every five years, mainly for shopping but the stay is much shorter, lasting at most two weeks. Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados are visited once every six years, particularly by graduates of the University of the West Indies which has campuses on these islands. These persons usually vacation with their friends as they rekindle old relationships.

To recap the extent to which Jamaican young adults take vacation and the places they travel is largely dependent on economic factors, which affect their ability to access travels documents. For those lucky enough to travel; international destination such as the United States and Canada are the most popular destinations followed by Regional destinations that offer a chance for a working vacation or to be reunited with their Caribbean neighbours.
