We have the need for morning volunteers this weekend, Saturday and Sunday morning at 830am if anyone would like to help. We have some really wonderful, outgoing dogs who would love the attention.

You can PM our page if you are interested in helping, again its 830am this Saturday and Sunday May 20, 21.

We are looking for dog walkers daily. Walks are at 830am and 3pm, with some weekend hours available too. We have had an increase in dogs coming in. With local adoptions down, and many of are partner shelters full its has been a challenge to move some of our larger adult dogs out of the shelter since the holidays.

We have a great group of dogs right now and they love spending time with volunteers.

If you are interested in volunteering please reach out to us in advance at [email protected], PM our page, or call 340 774 1625.

Today's is Doki, a sweet 22 pound adventure-seeker who was surrendered to us last month. Doki was frequently allowed to roam free on St. John, and he would always find his way to nearby villas where he could lounge with guests and join them on all sorts of adventures. He loves to hike, play with kids and other dogs, and we hear he's quite the avid paddle-boarder as well! He would prefer to be in a home without cats or other small animals.

Now Doki is looking for a family to adventure with forever! For more information about this sweet man, or to inquire about the adoption process, PM our page or email us at [email protected]!

Calling all travelers! We are looking for es**rts willing to take feline friends to our partner shelters in both Boston and Orlando. If you are traveling to either of those locations and would be interested in es**rting, let us know! The link below will take you to our es**rt form, and our staff will be in touch!

https://forms.gle/pZ8zbVeiSCqrUvnD6

Flying out of St Thomas but not traveling to one of these locations? No problem! We encourage you to still fill out our es**rt form - we never know where the next adoption will take us!

Escorting is easy - we handle all the logistics, paperwork and payment - all you have to do is cuddle your new friend on the plane ;-)

Before St. John had grocery stores and restaurants, fishing and small gardens were the primary means people used to obtain food. Fishermen would do the painstaking work of gathering hoop vine and teyer palm fronds from the steep hillsides and then meticulously craft these readily available materials into fish traps like the marvelous example pictured below.

Henry Samuel made this fish trap in 1963. Virgin Islanders fished the reefs around St. John and St. Thomas and fed themselves and their families with reef fish species such as Queen Triggerfish, Red Hinds, Parrotfishes, and more. Fishermen would row their boats out over the reefs, set and bait their traps, and check on them a day or two later.

On St. John, there was no market to take their catch to well into the 20th century, and so fishermen would have to haul their catch to Cruz Bay, where they would hire a sailboat captain to take their fish to the market on St. Thomas, where they could be sold, often not seeing the payment for their catch for days.

With the addition of modern marketplaces and the importation of goods from all over the world, the art of making fish traps from bush materials is disappearing. The next time you visit the grocery store and browse the seafood, consider the incredible ingenuity and craftsmanship our predecessors developed as they paved the way for the modern world.

Most visitors to Virgin Islands National Park's undeveloped beaches come for the peace, beauty and tranquility. Please remember that according to the Superintendent's Compendium and 36 CFR 2.12 audio disturbances over 60 decibels are prohibited.

How loud is 60 decibels? Well, 60 decibels is the equivalent of a normal conversation level. So if you are playing your amplified music any louder, please turn it down. Even tough you may enjoy your music other beach visitors may not.

Whether you are a resident or a visitor please respect the regulations of the National Park and enjoy your time at our beautiful beaches.

With heavy hearts we have to let you know that St. John’s beloved baobab tree on L’Esperance Trail has died. Our team together with the park and local horticulturalist Eleanor Gibney have been waging a battle with the Mango Stem Borer (Batocera rufomaculata) for the past year. The Mango Stem Borer is native to Asia and has unfortunately been introduced to St. John likely via the import of landscaping plants for private gardens. It is unfortunately also a serious pest of fig, mango, guava, jackfruit and pomegranate.

Our native plant team is looking at options to replace the baobab and have acquired seeds from St. Croix. If anyone has any baobab plants they would be willing to donate or sell to us, please contact Mark Gestwicki at [email protected] or call him on 340-779-4940!

Hi CCC Family, we are still in desperate need of Puppy Pal Escorts from the British Virgin Islands & US Virgin Islands to the states! 🙏🏻🏝🐶✈️🏡🙏🏻
We are unfortunately overwhelmed with Pups right now patiently waiting in line to take their Freedom Flights, and sadly without the help and kindness of our es**rts, many of them will end up getting too large to fly in-cabin if they are not able to get off-island in a timely manner, and begin their Happily Ever Afters, that they each very much deserve 🐕
PLEASE SHARE and let’s come together to help these sweet, deserving babies who desperately need us right now ♥️... Thank You CCC..🐾

Happy Emancipation Day to our beloved Virgin Islands and to those who graciously share their paradise with our visitors!

"All unfree in the Danish West Indies are from today free!"

Today we commemorate Emancipation Day in the U.S. Virgin Islands. On this historic day, we reflect on the sacrifice of our ancestors who held onto their faith as they fought for freedom. We are forever grateful!
