Hi everyone!!
If you are interested in the medical field but are still unsure if you want to do dentistry specifically there are many resources to help you decide:
Shadowing is a great way to introduce you to the field and enable you to see what day to day dentistry is like. although shadowing may not always be so exciting, it can take a couple tries until you find the right office for you. Don't be afraid to shadow various dentist (pediatric, orthodontic, periodontal, etc.) to learn about different fields and what you would like.
Another way to see if you would be interested in becoming a dentist is by hearing about other peoples experiences. Luckily, baps/caps dental page is full of resources of different dental students, dental professionals and even pre-health guidance.
you can visit our page here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUkeEFMYrr7UMT8qDrbzfQg
if you have any other questions please feel free to reach out to any of us here :)
Most dental schools require or recommend shadowing a dentist! NYU College of Dentistry recommends a minimum of 100 hours. Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine, and Tuoro College of Dental Medicine recommend shadowing a dentist. Dental School Digest also recommends shadowing over 150 hours in order to stand out. Some schools also require you to shadow more than one dentist! If you need help looking for shadowing opportunities feel free to reach out!
