There’s more to the aesthetics of DMS signs (CMSs) than meets the eye. 👀

DMSes do their job in alerting drivers about things like roadway hazards and traffic delays – but only because travelers can read the message clearly.✨

When programming a DMS, highway agencies have to follow specific guidelines around font size for visibility purposes. When drivers are going 40 mph, the character height must be 18 inches high, 24 inches for 50 mph, and finally 54 inches for any speed.🚗

That means along the lanes, the letters on our DMSes are about four and a half feet tall (banana for scale)!🍌

: From midnight Monday, Jan. 20 until the conclusion of the Presidential Inaugural events, the following traffic measures will be in effect:

🚫 The northbound 395 Express Lanes will be closed. This includes the ramps to the HOV/Rochambeau Memorial Bridge.

🚧 Drivers on the 95 Express Lanes will be redirected to the I-395 general purpose lanes near Edsall Road throughout the closure of the northbound Express Lanes.

🔄 The normal 11AM southbound 95/395 reversal will remain the same with most entry ramps to the southbound Lanes scheduled to open by about 12:30PM. However, access ramps at Eads Street and from the southbound HOV Rochambeau Memorial Bridge will remain closed until the events end.
