Friends on Torch Lake...
If you’ve been boating out on the lake, you may have seen a buoy in the middle of the lake.
You may have been attracted to the buoy with the white flashy light at night. So what’s this all about? GREAT question!
As you may know, Torch Lake Protection Alliance has joined forces with the United States Geological Survey to conduct a comprehensive study of Torch Lake over a three-year period. Part of the study involves the description and monitoring of vertical mixing. WHAT does that mean?
Many people know the presence of what’s called the thermocline, which is somewhat of a thermal break in a lake between the warmer water on top of the cooler water on the bottom. This is a dynamic situation, not a static situation. What is critical to our knowledge is the mixing of the temperature of the water from the surface to the bottom in a deep area. To accomplish this we have a string of 10 devices, called thermistors placed, from near the bottom up to just under the surface that collects the temperature as it varies overtime.
Data is recorded every 5 minutes throughout the year. The data will be downloaded in October and will become part of an extensive computer model! Now THAT'S research into why our beloved lake is changing!

Going to be a good air show this year.
To all the walleye anglers out there – we have a challenge for you. We’re partnering with Angler’s Atlas and their MyCatch app on a statewide walleye fishing challenge.
Here’s how it works. Through June 30th, anglers can record walleye catches through the MyCatch app and be entered for different types of prizes. This is a challenge containing several Midwest states and Canada, but Michigan anglers are only competing with other Michigan anglers.
Additional info on the challenge, and sign up, can be found at: https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/MIDNR/bulletins/39c5405
The MyCatch mobile app keeps location information anonymous, while providing key insight to fisheries researchers. This is a fun way to compete with other walleye anglers and help provide data to be used in continued management of Michigan’s fisheries.
As always, make sure you have your fishing license and are following all fishing regulations. Oh, and good luck!
Stop it. They’re giving out our secret places!
A new creative energy is invigorating this laid-back northern Michigan city, loved for its cherry festival, unspoiled lake vistas and access to epic dunes.

This is the last thing we need in Michigan. I’ve seen how this has devastated lakes in Florida. It plugs up intake in motors, fills lakes with weeds just below the surface and is expensive to control. Stop it now!!!

Our place in heaven is back up for sale. We were days from closing last fall when the buyers backed out due to funding. It's so quiet and peaceful, yet just minutes from Torch Lake (where our HOA has 200 feet of frontage). Get some friends together and get your piece of heaven or buy it yourself. Of course it has a rental history, but perhaps you want it just for your friends and family. Obviously, there is room for everyone and space for your toys. Bad day, too cold and rainy for the lake, jump in the sauna and heated pool.
If you wish, you can close and have this place by the first of June! The lodge can be turnkey, so you can move right in!
Call Travis below and find out the particulars.

Want a cool, relaxing way to volunteer?
💪We are looking for "Invasive Species Squashers!" ✴️
Grass River Natural Area is rich in biodiversity. However, like many places around the world, we still battle invasive species established in our wonderful wetlands and uplands. To get ahead of these invaders, a group of dedicated volunteers and staff are keeping busy. They do great work - and we need more people! This is a very relaxing way to volunteer, as you can remove and report invasives walking our beautiful trails and habitats. Through yearly yanking, pulling, and uprooting, we can drastically reduce yearly biomass of invasive plants and prevent both spread and new infestations. If you’re interested, please contact [email protected]

Many of our renters know about the train track that runs around the lodge but haven't seen a train run on it. Here is a video of a train making a circuit. By the way, we have a great train club in these parts. http://www.nmrrc.org/
