RapidVisa’s Origin Story
I’m Ben Ives, Founder and CEO of RapidVisa and this is our story.
Growing up in rural America in the 1960’s and 70’s, I had virtually no exposure to immigrants and we certainly didn’t do any international travel. This changed dramatically when I joined the Air Force and was stationed in Europe. Since then I have traveled extensively and am always thrilled to meet people from different countries and learn about their culture and to try their food. My family immigrated from England way back in 1635 so while I had no first-hand immigration experience, I had long admired the fascinating stories of people who gave up everything they knew to begin a new life in America.
More than 10 years ago I met my wonderful wife Jocelyn overseas. As a longtime software developer and IT professional I figured I would just go online, find something similar to Turbotax, and print out the completed visa application. I was really surprised to find that nobody offered this service online. So I researched the process, found the forms I needed and did it myself, with a lot of help from government websites and immigration forums. The process was tedious, repetitive and frustrating, but certainly not complicated enough to hire an immigration attorney. And I’m really glad I didn’t hire a lawyer after learning that they can charge $2,000 and even way, way with absolutely no evidence that they do anything to improve your chances of approval.
During the 6 month process of bringing my wife to America, I met a lot of great people online and later at the embassy who were traveling the same path and experiencing the same frustrations as I did. That’s when I decided to write the software that would become RapidVisa. We were the very first online family visa processor and we are still the only online visa processor that walks with you through the entire process from USCIS application to National Visa Center processing all the way through and including the embassy interview. In the past few years a few other websites have popped up that will do the easy part by generating the USCIS documents for you but then abandon you to figure out the much more complicated process of navigating your way through the National Visa Center and Embassy processes.
By 2018 we had helped over 35,000 people immigrate to the United States from over 180 different countries. In the early days I had to pull up a map to see where some of these countries were but now I like to say I’ve become a geography expert. This is a record unmatched by any business or attorney in America and an accomplishment we are very proud of. You learn a whole lot of things from processing this many visas and you hear a lot of stories, but the number one thing we found people need is somebody to walk with them through the process. Our software is great and it certainly helps keep costs down and improves accuracy, but in the end you need somebody who is going to pick up the phone seven days a week and address your concerns. Honestly any good programmer can write software that spits out completed immigration forms. But immigration is not a technical problem to be solved by engineers and software. Immigration is profoundly personal and one of the most important things you will do in your life. No software can talk you through the frustrations of dealing with the government’s arbitrary rules and confusing procedures. One thing we always promise visa applicants is that you will get frustrated somewhere along the way and when that happens we will be here with over 50 employees to reassure you and guide you to the finish line, just as we have with thousands of others that came before you. You’ll be dealing not only with the United States government which is bad enough, but also with the foreign government of the other country. During these times you really want somebody in your corner who has been through the process thousands of times before.

I want to leave you with one suggestion I think is very important. Be aware of just how significant your immigration story is. Right now it just feels like a lot of frustration and expense. But I promise you that one day, long after the hardships of the process are forgotten, your immigration story will be proudly and lovingly retold not only by you, but by your descendants for generations to come. Take videos, take pictures. Consider writing your story down while the process is new and fascinating. Write down your first impressions of America before familiarity dulls your excitement. What you are doing is significant and will change the lives of all in your family who follow you. Retell your story with pride and know that this country was built by people exactly like you who had the courage to leave everything behind and take a chance on the American dream.
