Congratulations Chief Morrell and the entire Gloucester City PD !
Last night at the council meeting, Chief Brian Morrell received the New Jersey State Chiefs of Police (NJSCOP) Accreditation Certificate of Achievement, on behalf of the GCPD, from the NJSCOP Accreditation Director Harry Delgado. The Accreditation Certificate is the culmination of three years of hard work and dedication from each member of the GCPD. The GCPD would also like to thank Lt. Stephen Burkhardt (retired), who started the accreditation process as the Accreditation Manager.
Accreditation is a progressive and time-proven method of assisting law enforcement agencies to calculate and improve their overall performance. The foundation of Accreditation lies in the adoption of standards containing a clear statement of professional objectives. Participating agencies conduct a thorough self-analysis to determine how existing operations can be adapted to meet these standards and objectives. When the procedures are in place, a team of trained, independent assessors verifies that the applicable standards have been successfully implemented.
State Accredited agencies are be eligible for insurance rate discounts and adhere to the best practices in policing.

For decades, the schools that our children attend and the hospitals that treat us in our times of need have been accredited by independent bodies. Those independent bodies regularly assess schools’ and hospitals’ written directives and business practices against established standards and either deem them worthy of our trust and confidence, or not. As a result, it would be inconceivable today that we would allow a loved one to be treated or educated in an unaccredited institution.
Like those other entities reliant upon the public’s trust to effectively fulfill their missions, LE agencies across the country are now participating in accreditation programs in unprecedented numbers. Voluntarily, transparently and regularly demonstrating their professionalism and adherence with recognized best practices is building confidence with the public they serve. Actions that enhance relationships and build trust with the public simply just make sense. State law enforcement accreditation entities organized under AccredNet and the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) are leading the way.
As law enforcement leaders prepare for the challenges of 2022, accreditation should be a key part of any strategic plan to improve performance and the delivery of public safety services to your community.

Our efforts will include assisting the agency update its policies and business practices to ensure compliance with all applicable accreditation standards as well as assisting the agency with its preparation for their future onsite assessment conducted by the accrediting body.
The customized training program which is designed to meet the agency’s in-service training requirements consists of a different online module every month for a year and results in all agency personnel who satisfactorily complete the program being eligible to receive 3 "free" college credits from Fairleigh Dickinson University.
