You and I call them dead trees. Some people call them eyesores. Or firewood. Biologists call them snags. Technically, the term refers to a dead or dying tree that’s still standing. Snags are important to wildlife and ultimately to us. As a tree dies — whether from a lightning strike, disease, fi...

A very unique bird that is seen in our area.

The Caracara bird reside in semi-open territory in only a few states in the southern US including Florida. The name 'Caracara' comes from a South American Indian name, based on the bird's call. These birds are often seen walking on the ground in search of prey.

Did you know? Even though it looks like a hawk, it is actually a falcon.

I am a little bat. I do not suck your blood, and I definitely don't want to get stuck in your hair - that's just gross. If I should accidentally fly into your house, please don't hit me with cricket bats and brooms. It really hurts, and I am so scared. It was an accident; I didn't mean to scare you. I am just as scared as you are. I am fighting for my life, and you are just scared; it is not a fair fight.

Should I land on the floor, I can't get up again; I will need your help. Just use a towel and take me outside. I promise, I will fly away immediately. I eat mosquitoes and a lot of other pests that can harm your garden. Our homes are being torn down for more buildings, and we have limited places to go. So, if I do accidentally fly into yours, switch off your light and leave the outside light on with the door open. I promise, I will be out in a flash.

Kind regards,
Your tiny, little, harmless bat.

Zip-up that mantle edge! The Half-naked Pen Shell (*Atrina seminuda*) may be found on the beaches of Sanibel and Captiva during winter months, when storm waves sn**ch the live bivalves from the bottom, depositing them on local beaches. Pen shells anchor themselves to the sandy bottom using a bundle of silky fibers called a byssus. Their triangle-shaped shells are buried with the shorter edge oriented upward. The photo on the bottom right shows a living Half-naked Pen Shell viewed from above and with the mantle cavity completely open, and the one on top illustrates how the animal is able to join both sides of the mantle edge to help regulate or stop the incoming flow of water, in a process akin to a natural “zipper”. Always say hi to Big Al when you visit the Calusa Nature Center & Planetarium . Walk up the ramp, look down, and there he is.

Close up on Big Al! He’s over 70 years old and has made his home at Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium for decades. Alligators are very Florida and you can see this behemoth at our center.

We love manatees. We always do safe, slow boating.

We love manatees. We always do safe, slow boating.

Boaters: Go Slow and Look Out Below!

Although safe boating week isn’t until next week – it’s never too early for a reminder on how to keep manatees safe while out on the water.

- Wear polarized glasses: Polarized lenses reduce glare, allowing you to see manatees and wildlife in the water better.

- Go slow and lookout below: Reduce your speed to increase your reaction time, and keep your eyes peeled for manatees that may be just below the surface.

- Designating a lookout: Designate a spotter to keep an eye out for what’s ahead – look for the circular manatee “footprint” on the water’s surface.

- Stash the Trash: Help keep wildlife safe and Florida beautiful by collecting any trash on the water and disposing of it in the proper receptacles.

Boating season can be a stressful time to be a manatee - do your part to help keep them safe this summer! If you see an injured, entangled, orphaned, or sick manatee, please call the FWC Wildlife Alert Hotline at (1-888-404-3922) to report it as soon as possible! FWC Photo
