Rhine Getaway River Cruise, Day 6: Kinderdijk, The Netherlands

Kinderdijk is a village community in the Alblasserwaard province. This corner of South Holland, part of the scenic Waal and Merwede regions, has long been shaped by Rhine Delta waters. Kinderdijk is most known for its 19 remarkably preserved 18th-century windmills.

The charming hamlet is located amid low-lying polders, tracts of land reclaimed from the sea by the power of the windmills and enclosed by embankments, or d**es.

This legendary place calls to mind the 1865 novel Hans Brinker, in which a heroic boy plugs his finger into a ruptured d**e.

Rhine Getaway River Cruise, Day 5: Cologne, Germany

Cologne reveals its Roman heritage in its city layout and the ancient ruins that lie scattered through the town. Cologne’s modern plazas and Hohe Strasse host welcoming shops, enticing restaurants and cologne boutiques. Of note is the city’s 14th-century cathedral, a stunning example of Gothic artistry and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Allied forces bombed 90 percent of Cologne during WWII so the juxtaposition of old and new is significant.

Rhine River Cruise, Day 4: Koblenz, Germany

Docked in beautiful Koblenz. Took the Koblenz cable car (Seilbahn Koblenz), an aerial lift that was opened in 2010 in Koblenz for the Bundesgartenschau (a biennial exhibition) the following year.

It connects the banks of the river Rhine and the hill plateau next to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress.

Afterwards sat at a café for a glass of wine and to enjoy the weather, followed by a leisurely stroll through the city before returning to the ship for dinner.

Rhine River Cruise, Day 3: Speyer and Rudesheim, Germany

Visited the Technik Museum. It’s home to an incredible amount of transportation types, including a Lufthansa Boeing 747-200, a Soviet/Russian Buran spacecraft, OK-GLI, an Antonov An-22 and several other aircraft types.

Other exhibits display fire engines, mechanical organs, vintage cars, motorcycles, locomotives, helicopters, and military aircraft.

After a scenic sailing along the Rhine we stopped in charming Rudesheim and walked among the vines above the city to take in views of the river below.

Rhine Getaway, Day 2: Kehl, Germany and Strasbourg, France

Strasbourg is the capital city of the Grand Est region, formerly Alsace, in northeastern France. It's also the formal seat of the European Parliament and sits near the German border, with culture and architecture blending German and French traditions.

We took a scenic drive to an optional excursion for an Alsatian wine tasting. Ninety percent of the wine produced in this area is white wine, specifically riesling.

Rhine Getaway, Day 1: Breisach

Breisach is a gateway to the fabled Black Forest region, built on a basalt rock outcropping in the Rhine plain. It is located in one of the warmest parts of Germany, across the river from French Alsace, famous for its wine growing.

But Breisach, too, can boast about its wine: it is home to Europe's largest cellars, with a storage capacity of more than 160 million liters.

The most prominent landmark of Breisach is the Romanesque-Gothic St. Stephen’s Cathedral, built between the 12th and 13th centuries. Its two towers are visible from throughout the city and from the Rhine.
