Heritage Architectural Associates Architecture and Historic Preservation The firm’s work is grounded by a philosophy that respects the impact of time upon the built environment.

Heritage Architectural Associates is an award-winning full service architectural firm that specializes in architectural restoration, additions to historic structures, new design within historic contexts, and downtown revitalization. Established in 1998, the firm is led by Steven Avdakov, a registered architect in five states with over twenty-five years of architectural and historic preservation ex

perience. He holds a Master of Science degree in Historic Preservation from Columbia University, and his experience meets federal professional qualifications for Architecture and Historic Architecture. Heritage has done extensive work on downtown revitalization projects, theaters, educational facilities and historic house museums. Most of the firm’s commissions to date have involved publicly funded rehabilitation to historic resources that are listed or are eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Thus, much of the firm’s work has been subject to Section 106 review for compliance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation by numerous local historic preservation boards, several State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPO), and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation. Heritage also offers significant experience in preservation master planning, Historic Structures Reports (HSR’s), nominations to the National Register of Historic Places, and documentation of historic resources. The firm has served as a catalyst for many community-based preservation projects that have involved public sector and non-profit clients. Due to the budget constraints of this type of work, phased implementation and cost analysis are integrated into all stages of the design process. Heritage also offers expertise in identifying funding sources to allow organizations to launch projects and then continue their efforts to completion through a phased approach. The firm has long-standing relationships with several clients through multiple-phased projects. Heritage Architectural Associates believes that historic preservation is but one facet of a broader ethos of conservation. It is the goal of the firm to actively pursue work that preserves the vitality of historic communities and fosters the uniqueness of place.

Good morning beautiful people! Welcome to, "Would you like to know Tuesday?!" On May 10th, of 2023 there was a speaking engagement at Central State University, in regards to the restoration of the historic landmark Tawawa Chimney Corner (TCC).
(TCC) was owned by a slave owner Philip Piper, the second owner was Bishop Benjamin William Arnett Sr. and the third owner was Bishop Reverdy C. Ransom, located in Wilberforce, OH.
Over a hundred years later, descendants from the Piper, Arnett & Ransom families are working closely together to tell the story of (TCC).
In the picture listed below, from left to right are Steve from (Heritage), Debbie Ransom, Stephanie Ransom, Yvonne Ransom-Mizell, Brenda Ransom, Debbie from (Heritage) and Curtis E. Ransom.
The Bishop Reverdy C. & Emma S. Ransom Foundation was created to celebrate the accomplishments of black excellence and achievements of the two notable Bishops', that owned the historic estate (TCC), during two different times. Let's continue, to support (TCC)!

Although it’s difficult to witness the closing of Ss. Peter & Paul Orthodox Church in Moundsvile, it is gratifying to have the church live on as a donor to St. Moses the Black Orthodox Church in the Hill District of Pittsburgh. Steve has a lifetime personal connection to Ss. Peter & Paul and designed the interior liturgical elements. This video from WQED-Pittsburgh documents the donated elements and also highlights the important mission of the recipient parish. Despite the sadness, we are proud to have Ss. Peter & Paul live on in this manner.

In a neighborhood where most people are Protestant or Roman Catholic, a different religious order is beginning to attract parishioners on Bedford Avenue in P...

On this day, let us pause to consider the meaning of both the powerful words and courageous deeds of Dr. King and so many others who have contributed to the continuous efforts to achieve equal rights and social justice.

The Hampton House in Miami served as an important venue in for the struggle for African-American civil rights in the 1960s. Reflecting this historic significance of the Hampton House, the major motion picture “One Night in Miami”, which was released to Amazon Prime last Friday, is set at the motel.

Heritage is proud to have been the Historic Preservation Consultant on the restoration of the Hampton House, which was completed in 2015. The building, which had been vacant for decades, was severely deteriorated at the start of the project. We oversaw the rehabilitation, re-creation and interpretation of all significant historic aspects of the building. The areas restored to historic appearance include the exterior, lobby, coffee shop, and three motel rooms, include the one used by Martin Luther King.

Please enjoy the "before" and "after" photos showing the rehabilitation of this historic civil rights site! In this video, Steve Avdakov gives a tour of the motel during the Grand Opening. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=niy5NA6_csE&t=69s
