How is wind drift calculated…⬇️

Simplified for a constant crosswind and Ignoring spin drift and other effects…

Lag time: the actual time of flight minus the time of flight in a vacuum.

Essentially what all this is saying is that Wz is the wind speed, and causes the bullet to gain velocity in the direction of the wind. The more time in the wind, the more the bullet speeds up in that direction, and the further it drifts.

I just compared this equation to a few ballistic calculators, and was about 3% off at 1000 yards. 96” of drift from the equation vs 99” from the calculator. Which makes sense since spin drift wasn’t factored in this equation, but was in the ballistic calculator.

Try it yourself and see how the data compares! All you need is a constant cross wind speed, muzzle velocity, distance to target, and time of flight (found with a ballistic calculator). I compared to the online calculator. Be sure to convert all distances to the same units.

Have you ever used bushing dies before?

Either use them to set final neck tension, or under size slightly then set the final size with a mandrel. Either way it helps prevent overworking the brass by not sizing the necks more than needed.

Ballistic calculators have made shooting long range accessible even for beginners. With all the complex calculation done for us, shots can be made quickly and accurately. But like any computer, they only work well if given accurate data. G1 and G7 are the most common ballistic coefficients (B.C.) used for rifle bullets, but which one you use matters and they are not interchangeable. Each is based off a specific profile and the BC listed for each bullet is in comparison to this.

The g standards are measured drag for specific bullet shapes. The BC listed on the box is the drag of the projectile compared to the standard of that g series.

As you can see, using a g7 for a flat based round nose bullet will give less precise results than a g1. Same with using g1 for an eld style bullet.

From the B.C. Equation on the last slide you can see this drag comparison as the form factor (i). B.C. Is also influenced by bullet mass (m) and diameter(d).

Luckily calculators do all this math for us, but it’s important to know what inputs matter and how it is calculated to make sure the output is accurate.

Another build and another project to work on. The Terminus Zeus short action quick change installed in a McMillan Game awardee LR with a Nightforce ATACR 5-25x56mm in Nightforce 6-screw ultras. M5 DBM bottom with a Trigger Tech Diamond trigger. Let’s take this out to 750 yards and see what it will do.

By the last day of Montana antelope season, The goats can be a little spooky. That's when a good rifle like the Carbon can bail you out. Taken from the haystack in the background at 780 yd. One shot to the vitals and Broz notched his B tag.

It’s been just over 1-year since the first Long Range Only So. Africa safari. Many great trophies were taken including a Kudu, Sable, Cape Buffalo, Blue Wildebeast, Blesbok and Springbok. Long shots were plenty with the new ranch record of 1104 yards taken on a Springbok by LRO’s own, Ladd. The Terminus Kratos with a 300 PRC barrel with a 215 gr Berger found the mark. Longest shot to date but again it was practice and preparation. I tuned this setup to be consistent and very accurate putting 200 rounds down the barrel prior to leaving the states. It was a hunt to remember. You too can have this adventure when LRO goes again in May 2024. There are 2-spots open if you’re interested. I can’t believe it has been 10-years since I drew a sweet Nevada elk tag. I had my Re*****on Sendero 7mm Rem Mag dialed in with practice out to 900 yards. When the 3-day snow storm passed we knew where to find some good bulls. Dave and I hiked up to this rock and could see a beautiful bull we guessed would go 370” but he was 1170 yards away with no chance to get closer plus he was walking away from us up the ridge. Never having put a tag on a good 6-point bull I chose the bull 350 yards closer. I ranged him my with Gunwerks BR2 and dialed my scope to the moa and doubled checked it with the dope I had taped to the stock then pulled the trigger. This 353” bull dropped in its tracks a fraction of a second after the Berger 168 gr VLDH hit him high on the shoulder. After we packed the first load to the truck there was a note taped to the window of my truck that said, “why didn’t you shoot the bigger one.” That’s how it goes sometimes. We practice for the moment and take the shot we are most comfortable with. Long Range Only is about doing long range right. Come on over to LongRangeOnly.com and see what we mean.
