Why do I love and encourage river cruising, particularly in December for holiday markets? Glad you asked ...
You glide slowly past medieval towns and villages ... you are in a floating hotel that provides you with your epicurean meals, spirits (not the ghostly kind), camaraderie, spectacular views, and visits to fairytale towns with markets going back centuries. Since the earliest settlements were along the riverbanks, the architecture of these famed market cities --- along the Rhine, the Danube .... is as charming and quaint as a town can get.
My own personal favorites are the Main-Danube, FRA to Nuremberg, visiting magical Bamberg, Main-Danube NUE to Vienna, and the Rhine ANYwhere ...
