Destination Washington is a collaborative effort by 20 outstanding photographers to bring to its viewers high quality images capturing the beauty Washington State. Our photographers will give visitors an amazing photo journey highlighting the best of Washington and offering tidbits of information along the way.Our hope is that these images provide inspiration and viewing pleasure to our viewers. ur photographers go beyond documenting the beauty of various locations to also convey the spirit and energy of the place from the perspective of each photographer's vision. The Page encompasses a diversity of photographic styles and features photographers from all walks of life. Vancouver celebrated its 100th birthday by hosting Expo 86, a six-month transportation-themed world's fair held on the northern and eastern shore of False Creek. The Expo Centre was built for Expo 86, and it contained theatre and various displays.
It later became Science World, featuring many permanent interactive exhibits and displays, as well as areas with varying topics throughout the years.

Just outside the Hoh Rainforest in Olympic National Park is the Black Forest area. It's amazing to see the difference in the forest and forest floor between the National Park which has very strict practices about forest management and the Black Forest which has fallen under a different set of rules. Both areas are amazing and dramatically different when you slow down and notice the details. https://johnpedersenphoto.com

Pushing the boundaries of Destination PNW to include this beautiful memory of Sunwapta Falls, one of the many waterfalls in Jasper Nation Park in Beautiful Alberta Ca. This area was scorched last week by a catastrophic fire. Tha water still flows but it will take many years to restore to its former forested beauty.

I so love our PNW lighthouses. Below is the North Head Lighthouse at Cape Disappointment located in Ilwaco, Wa. Photo taken 7/4/24.

What's your favorite PNW lighthouse?

North Head Lighthouse was built to provide an aide to navigation for ships approaching from the north. Those ships could not see Cape Disappointment lighthouse, two miles to the south, in time to safely enter the Columbia River channel.

Construction began on North Head lighthouse in 1897 and it was completed and lit on May 16, 1898. The lighthouse was constructed by George Langford, an early contractor and builder from Portland, Oregon. The tower was built 65 feet above the ground, designed large enough to hold the First-order Fresnel lens transferred from Cape Disappointment lighthouse.

On Saturday night, May 27th, a small solar storm reached earth. It may have been small, but it packed a punch. At first it looked like it may be a dud. Charts and graphs over on NOAA's space weather page were hardly moving. Then out of nowhere everything erupted. Aurora data skyrocketed and night photographers all over Washington started to scramble to get out of the city lights. While the aurora can be photographed over Seattle if it is a strong enough storm, it isn't ideal for viewing. I decided this time I wanted to try to spend more time watching and less time fiddling with my camera. So I pick this great dark vista on Whidbey Island. Set my camera up to time lapse and I watched. I had a friend with me and every time the aurora changed I would say, "Wow! Do you see that?" I'm not sure if I drove him crazy or not, but watching the aurora dance through the sky is breath taking. It is like ooohing and aaahing over fireworks. I just couldn't help it. :) Colors picked up by the camera sensor are more intense, but green and purple hues were visible Saturday night if you were in a dark enough spot to see them. If you have yet to see the Northern Lights here in Washington sign-up for aurora alerts for your phone, join an aurora group, or follow one of the many web pages devoted to aurora chasing.
