Southwest Airlines claims that bags fly free. But do they, really?
I know there are a lot of people who love flying on Southwest Airlines, but I am not one of them. On a recent search for airfare for an upcoming cruise, I was happy that Southwest extended their schedule to include the dates that I needed. Generally, when Southwest Airlines enters a market, airfare prices dropped. This is known as the “Southwest Effect.”
To my surprise, a round trip ticket between BWI and Fort Lauderdale was $574 on Southwest. Whoa!!! I tend to shop between several local airports to find the best prices. I was able to secure round trip airfare between Washington National and Fort Lauderdale for $389 on American. That is a “Choice Essential” fare which includes one checked bag and group I boarding. Additionally, I purchased extra legroom seats for $47. The total American airfare is $436. That’s $138 less than Southwest. Even if I took a second bag on American, that fare is only $507, still less than Southwest’s $574.
Yes I am comparing airfare from two different airports, but I live the exact same distance between each airport. If you want to know the Southwest price from National to Fort Lauderdale, it is a whopping $724!!!
What’s the moral of my story? Simple. Check several airlines (and airports) for the best fare. I am starting to notice a “Spirit Effect” where airlines are starting to “bundle” fares. So now you can purchase an airfare to include checked bags, priority boarding, carry-ons, etc.
Southwest says bags fly free, but sometimes it’s cheaper to pay for your bags on another carrier.
