Urbanna Museum & Visitors Center: Officially named the James Mill Scottish Factor Store, this structure was built in 1766 and is one of the oldest surviving mercantile structures in America associated with the sale of to***co by the Urbanna Creek port.

Before the emergence of the Scottish factors, to***co and other crops were shipped directly from the largest plantations to England in exchange for goods on the return voyage.

The Scott's established stores where to***co was exchanged immediately for cash and credit with which to purchase imported goods for sale.

View an original 1755 John Mitchel Map referred to as "The most important map in American history," as well as a wonderful exhibit celebrating our oyster history.

Our Story

This page is a privately owned signpost in support of the Town’s Museum and the John Mitchell map.

Besides being located in the last existing colonial Scottish Factor Store (circa 1766), Urbanna’s museum houses an item many people would travel half-way around the world just to stand in front of. The Town of Urbanna, VA is the proud owner of a First Edition, Third Impression John Mitchell Map, published in 1755. Folks, John Mitchell's Map was used to define the borders of our newly formed country, following the Revolutionary War. That's right! AND, the map's creator, John Mitchell, lived right here in Urbanna, Virginia!

The museum has limited its winter hours to Fridays -Sundays, through March 2020. The building has been undergoing repairs, especially to the porch, in recent months.

Thank you for you interest!
