Time's running out, if it hasn't already. It's not just sea level rise that threatens, it's species die-off, water wars and monumental changes to agriculture and fisheries. Vote as if your and your kids'/grandkids' lives depend on it, because they do!

I've been traveling to Belize & doing business there since the '80s. I've always been impressed how Belize has kept so much of their beautiful country in a pristine state. This is a shocking example of unchecked population growth and poverty driving ecological collapse. Do take the time to watch the ~1 minute time-lapse. -- Randy Green

For a window into how research is being done on Antarctica's response to climate warming, here's a great article about Aussie researchers on the Frozen Continent!

I was on Midway Island about 18-20 years ago and was appalled and astounded at the plastic. I happened to be there at the same time a National Geographic film crew was there with Dr. Robert Ballard, who was doing a documentary on the Midway battles as they were looking for sunken Japanese and American ships. The Nat. Geo photographers and I got to talking and I told them at the time I felt there was a huge story with the plastic in the gullets of the chicks. The nests were full of regurgitated lighters, toothbrushes, bottle caps and all sorts of other small plastics (even plastic razors) where dead birds had decomposed. The park guides told me at the time that chicks can carry up to 3 pounds of plastic in their stomachs before it kills them and it is not a fast death--it is slow and painful.

When I returned home, it made me take at hard look at all plastic I use. Even the little plastic cap that is pulled from an orange juice carton--I still always think about it and wonder -- where does that end up? Same with all plastic water bottles and caps. It is a tragedy what we are doing to our planet one bottle cap at a time. It is not just Midway Island, although that was most visible. The plastic is all over--think about your plastic use--watch the news clip, read the article PLEASE--I have seen it -- it is real! Our plastic may not end up in the Pacific but it ends up some where you might not like.

Eight million tons of plastic end up in our oceans every year. What it's done to this island is a stark warning.

We belong to IGTOA and can recommend them as a reputable organization for collecting money for water filtration for survivors of the devastating earthquake in Ecuador.

Today IGTOA launched a campaign to raise $10,000 in the next week to purchase water filtration units for the survivors of the recent earthquake in Ecuador. Access to clean water is the most urgent need within the disaster zone. If we hit our goal, we'll purchase and deliver enough Sawyer water filters to produce 40,000 gallons of safe drinking water per day for the next 10 years. You can donate at the link below if you're feeling generous. Thanks!

Amazing shots of one of Sir Ernest Shackleton's expeditions to Antarctica from undiscovered frozen film found in Scott's cabin. They were stranded there more than a century ago when the wind blew their ship out to sea.

Researchers fro New Zealand found the film and processed it.

For the past 100 years, a box of never-before-seen negatives has been preserved in a block of ice in Antarctica. Recently, Conservators of the New Zealand Antarctic Heritage Trust came across the 22 exposed, but unprocessed, cellulose nitrate negatives during an attempt to restore an old explora
